Next meeting topic for Tuesday, Februrary 10th, 2015
    TAKING THE TIME TO LAUGH

AWBO is pleased to welcome Sally Coffman as our guest speaker.  Sara Jane "Sally" Coffman, SWF, asks the Big
Questions, like, "If we can put a man on the moon, why can't I find a comfortable bra?" and "Is my new boyfriend's ex-wife really going to kill me, or is she just bluffing?"

Sally can dish the dirt or fry it up on a pan, she can turn the simple purchase of a new writing chair into an entire room renovation, and she can tolerate almost any flaw in a man if he has tenure and benefits. Mostly, though, Sally can make you laugh.

Please join us on Tuesday, February 10th for a fun time!
    --------------------------------------------
    A Note from Your President...
It must be fun to be February.  You provide us a shortened month to work.  You provide us the celebration of Valentine’s Day.  You also have the fun of throwing in an extra day every 4 years and calling it Leap Year.  So with that being said, February’s AWBO theme will be FUN!

There are many things that we each consider fun.  My fun may not be what you would consider fun, but that’s what makes us each unique.  I have a friend who is a mountain
climber.  Very cool, but not for me.  I love hiking and the mountains, but climbing, that is certainly something I have no desire to do.  I like my feet on the ground.

One thing I do love to do is read.  I always say that reading a book is like a movie in your mind.  You imagine all the characters.  You get enthralled in the plot, you cry, you laugh, you try to figure out who did it.  With that being said, we are so happy to have Sara Jane Coffman as our guest speaker this month. She is going to discuss her book “There is No Such Thing as a Comfortable Bra”.  How fun is that?!

Ladies, remember to take time to laugh.  Take time to enjoy the fellowship of other women who understand that it’s not always easy being a business owner.  Take time for
you.  We are no good if we aren't taking care of ourselves. So share the fun, share your passions, but most of all, know that you are awesome!

    Respectfully,
    Jan French
    AWBO President
    Empowering Women in Business

PS: I am so sorry to be missing this fun meeting, but I will be on vacation with my husband and will also be visiting my Dad.  I’ll enjoy my fun, while you enjoy fun with Sara Jane!

    Rhonda Feuer
The Pampered Chef gives me the ability to help hosts, guests and consultants get the right tools for an efficient even fun kitchen.  I help with time saving tips and preparations for meals with budget friendly recipes. Making life easier and fun in the kitchen is a priority.  It's such a great way to bring families & friends together.  This year will be my 23rd Anniversary.  I still love it and love helping others get free tools or even a commission check!

I started with AWBO back in 2001 and was an active member & past president. I left the group about four years ago because of children and availability.  Times have changed again and I am back.  I truly enjoy this group of hard working ladies that share their time and talents!  This
group offers a unique opportunity to grow personally, as well as professionally.  Hospitality/Greeter is my position. Since I love to talk & meet new people it is a great fit.

    MOTIVATION FOR 2015

AWBO is pleased to welcome Michele Luck of Unlimited Luck, LLC as our guest speaker. Michele Luck is an author, motivational coach, and speaker who brings her contagious enthusiasm to her workshops and events. With extensive training and experience in differentiated instruction and engagement, her inspiration motivates participants to reclaim their desire to learn and build upon their natural talents and strengths.

Please join us for lunch and networking from 11:30am until the meeting begins at 12pm. Meeting ends by 1pm

    --------------------------------------------
    A Note from Your President...
January, 2015. Can you believe it? Where did 2014 go? Did you reach the goals you set for 2014? Did your business grow, did you get new employees, did you have your ups and downs. etc? Now, on top of that, did you get your personal bills in order, get a new house or remodel, have a health change, send a child to college, say good-bye to a loved one, welcomed a new baby, etc? When you look back, it’s amazing what we go through in a year.

This past year I increased my social media, gave more responsibility to my assistant, made a couple of quoting mistakes (always learning) and became President of AWBO.  My husband and I celebrated our 33rd Anniversary. We went out east to celebrate my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday. I lost a couple family members and a couple friends.

How do we keep going? What motivates you to get up every morning? It’s different for all of us. No two of us are alike, so we need to find our personal motivation. I had
to make changes to my diet and to start exercising this past year, something that I did because I had to, not because I wanted to. But I must admit, I am feeling better than I have in years. I have energy and an appreciation for feeling good for the first time in 4 years. I like feeling good and having energy and I don’t want to lose that. That’s part
of my motivation! I also have goals for my business and with the help of my assistant Jordan, we have agreed to keep each other accountable. That’s motivation!

So where are you going with this you ask? Everyone has a story. Everyone has been motivated or will be motivated by something or someone in their lives. Maybe it has already happened to you. Maybe this is the year. Let us motivate each other to be the best we can be for 2015!

    Happy New Year!

    THANK YOU!!
Thank you to all who attended and donated to our Annual Holiday Auction and Raffle!  What a wonderful event full of networking, silent auctions gifts, raffle gifts and, with much generosity, donations for two great causes.

We were able to provide a $295 memorial to Dan Webb in honor of Joanne‘s Leadership and Friendship in AWBO.  If you would still like to submit a note for the book we will be sending to Dan, you may still do that via e-mail to Jan French or at our meeting next week.

We will report on the monetary donation to Cary Home for Girls after our monthly board meeting. The Cary Home Reps, Julie Pressler and Maddie Riordan, left with armfuls
of donated gifts for the girls. Cary Home is a great place to teach a skill like painting, writing, exercise, etc., just give them a call. Again we thank you for your caring for our
    community!

    3 MINUTE SPOTLIGHT

    A Note from Your President...
Thanksgiving is over and now it’s time for the Holiday Season. You know what that means? Parties, Shopping, Cooking, Family Visits, End of year business stuff...the list is endless. What can you do to keep the stress to a minimum? Take time for yourself. Smile.  Don’t worry about the small stuff. Reflect on your faith and the reasons you celebrate the holiday season.

"How can we do that", you ask? There aren't enough hours in the day.  Is it worth stressing out over 10 relatives coming over for dinner or do you just go with the flow? Something may have been missed getting on the dinner table, is that the end of the world?  No. It’s life.  Does Uncle Harry tell the same 3 stories every time you see him? Take a bet to see how long it takes for him to get going. Got someone the wrong size last year? Grab a friend, have dinner then go to the store for gift cards. Shopping is done and you got to visit with a friend.

Another idea is to reach out to other women who own a business and share how they deal with the holidays. Are there AWBO members that can assist you with your holiday needs?  What a better place to do that than at the AWBO Holiday Auction and Raffle on Tuesday, December 9th. Come and enjoy visiting, shopping and supporting a great cause, Carey Home for Girls.

    Happy Holidays!

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, November 11th at Noon:

    Obama Care & Tax Implications

    For Your Business In 2015

AWBO is pleased to welcome Kimberley Morisette, CPA at Huth Thompson, LLC as our guest speaker. Kimberley will be presenting “Tax Implications of Obama Care for 2015 for Small Business Owners”. No matter what your business is, it is always smart to stay on top of tax changes and implications. No easy task for most of us in small businesses. What can we expect? How will it affect our businesses? Are there penalties? These questions and more will be discussed.

Kimberley Morisette joined Huth Thompson LLP, in 1998 after working as an internal auditor in Maryland for a large not-for-profit organization and became partner in 2010. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the State University of New York in 1997. While Kimberley specializes in not-for-profit clients, she provides accounting, management, and tax services to many types of clients. Her years of experience provide expansive knowledge in auditing, accounting, reporting, tax, and operational issues affecting individuals and businesses. Kimberley is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a member of the Indiana CPA Society.  She was awarded the Indiana CPA Society, “Five Under 35 Emerging Leaders in the CPA Profession” Award.  She enjoys contributing to the community and in prior years she has served as treasurer for Food Finders, Inc. in Lafayette.  She currently serves as the treasurer for the Lafayette Symphony Foundation, Inc. and this October she started serving as a board member for the Lafayette Art Museum.

We are also happy to announce that AWBO’s November Meeting and Lunch is being Sponsored by 1st Source Bank. Being invested in the Community and supporting Women in Business is important to 1st Source and we thank them for this opportunity for Education and Lunch.

In order to keep an accurate account for lunch, we ask that you and your guest sign in first at the Welcome Table. You will be given a blue ticket to bring with you to give to the cashier.

Please join us for lunch and networking from 11:30am until the meeting begins at 12pm. Meeting ends by 1pm. (If you are late, no worries, you still get a lunch ticket).

    --------------------------------------------
    A Note from Your President...
It’s November.  The leaves are falling, the patio furniture is put away, the winter sweaters are coming out of storage, the heat is turned on and we are ready for the winter, holidays, busy schedules and coming to the end of 2014.

What are you doing in your business to prep for your winterizing?  How about joining us on Tuesday, November 11th as we welcome Kimberley Morisette, CPA of Huth Thompson, speak on “Tax Implications of Obama Care for 2015 for Small Business Owners”.  We are also happy to have Source1 Bank sponsoring our lunch and speaker. Thanks to both!

How can we start the new year in our businesses?

Education: Keeping up with the laws, rules and regulations.
Motivation: We are all women business owners, it’s not always easy, we can help motivate each other.
Community: Know that there are so many ways, we as women business owners can reach out into our community and make a difference.
Fun: Laughter is the best medicine. Enjoy life, laugh at yourself, laugh with each other, take a break.

Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, October 14th at Noon:

    My Journey

Community Cancer Network has a vision: that all cancer patients and families in Mid-North Indiana have consistent and professional support during treatment and recovery. Support to ease the burden of care and concern, so patients can focus on rest, recovery, and their families. Information they can use to better plan their care and support. Supplies to reduce the financial and emotional struggle cancer often is.

Join us on Tuesday, October 14th at 12pm as Lori shares her Journey and how the support of a “network” can help.

Lunch and networking begins at 11:30am, meeting 12pm to 1pm.
    --------------------------------------------
    From the President...
It is my honor to write my first newsletter as your AWBO President for 2014-2015. First of all, I wish to thank Tammy Foley on behalf of all the AWBO members for her two years as our President. Your confidence in me, as well as the board, to become our next President was very humbling and I appreciate your guidance and support.

I want to share with you my vision for this next year.  I became a woman business owner in 2011 after being in the industry for only three years. I worked 30 years in the medical industry prior to that. I took a leap of faith to turn a very well run side business into a fulltime business. I was taught so much in three years, but needed other women that could help me without feeling threatened.

I visited AWBO before the 2008 downfall and upon joining in 2013, I found that the numbers had gone down for many obvious reasons and some for not so obvious reasons. In the last couple of years, I have met a great group of very dedicated women who can answer my questions, calm my insecurities and laugh at our lives. It was our job as program committee members to bring more substance and awareness to who AWBO is and what we represent, to bring programs that related to the changing times and views of business/media, to provide time to network and to start building or to continue relationships.  My goal is  to continue to grow, educate, communicate and build relationships.

My e-mail is jan@cfactorpromotional.com, office phone is 765-446-1814 and my cell phone is 765-414-1035 (you may also text). Please feel free to contact me.

    Thank you,

    Jan French

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, September 9th at Noon:

We All Have A Story To Tell

We’ve entered the post-advertising age, and all the rules have suddenly changed. People have become more drawn to genuine stories rather than convincing arguments, and it’s time that businesses reached deep inside of themselves, discovered a story worth telling, and placed it into forefront of their communication. Garrett will share a few examples of stories worth telling from the clients he’s worked with, as well ways that you may discover your own.

Garrett Curry of Raygun Workshop is a brand strategist who tells true stories with pixels, print and people. He lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Julia Curry (Eating Psychology Coach), two children and their dog, Spike Murphy.

    Hi AWBO members and non-members!
I am on the hospitality committee and I take AWBO and my office very serious.  Let me tell you what makes it important.  Meeting with members monthly builds friendships.  I meet new women who have used  their imaginations to bring income to their households.  Many of them have helped me in various ways.

Another wonderful thing about AWBO, are the speakers. One of them was Tenecia Waddell.  She was this years YWCA Woman of Innovation Honoree.  She is a police officer on the Purdue Police Department.  Although her talk was entitled "Safety in the work place", I learned some very helpful things about keeping safe while shopping, as well as in the parking lot.  "Whenever being confronted by an attacker, always look them in the face. Don't let them feel you fear."  Same goes for the work place...how to handle unwanted advances/harassment.

It is wonderful to see so many ladies visiting our luncheon meeting and becoming members, "Welcome to each of you!  See you soon?"

As an instructor of self-defense programs, she empowers and educates women and children to defend themselves and learn how to be safe.

As a single mother of three boys, Tenecia balances family, work, education and volunteer activities. She received her Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice in May, 2014 with Cum Lade Academic Honors and Phi Theta Kappa Honors after putting her studies on hold to raise her sons. She loves instilling the importance of education and a balance of selflessness in her sons and also involves them in her volunteer efforts. She enjoys promoting healthy living and loves to bike!

Her current volunteer activities include being Co-founder and Board Member of Delivering Smiles Tippecanoe (which raises money to assist local public safety employees in times of emergency need); Committee Member of the Ultimate Pink Party since 2012; Appointed Executive Board Member of the Purdue University Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff.

Tenecia was named the YWCA's Woman of Innovation Honoree for 2014.

Through her perseverance and dedication to her family, career and community, Tenecia has made a positive impact by being a role model of great ethics and integrity!

    From the President...

Great Leaders are Students of Success

What is your roll in business?  Whether your roll is to help others, create opportunity or make money, you need to have crystal clear purpose.  As a business owner you communicate, have a vision, are goal oriented.  You have created a strategic plan, have empathy, synergistic thinking and a time master.  Great leaders are students of success.  You understand that success is a verb and take action.
As our marketplace evolves, your leadership and vision will create success!

Wishing you all the best in your business ventures,

    Summer Social follow up...
On Tuesday, June 10th, 50 plus AWBO members and guests gathered at Adelino's for our Annual AWBO Summer Social. Our goal for the evening was to learn more about the women we see each month at our regular AWBO meetings as well as meet other professional women and promote the benefits of AWBO. I am happy to report, based on the feedback from those who attended, that we were successful in that mission. Finding time to develop meaningful professional relationships can be very difficult. A purposeful networking event is just the beginning and hopefully you have had opportunities to follow up with new contacts.

    --------------------------------------------
    From the President Elect...

When invited to a "networking event", we do one of 2 things: 1) We meet the opportunity with full enthusiasm or 2) We schedule that root canal thinking that a visit to the dentist may be less painful than milling around a room full of confident business owners.  Truth is...and you have to admit it....we all fall somewhere in between. One reason networking can result in feelings of anxiety is because past experience informs us that 1) Overly aggressive characters really love to talk about themselves and we struggle to leave an impression and 2) We throw ourselves into the snake pit and there are no rules to follow - it's "Survival of the fittest".

On Tuesday, June 10th we will challenge that paradigm and hopefully establish a new standard for networking.  We promise not to tape anything to your backside for you to guess what cartoon character you are.  We will, however, create a platform that will foster quality conversations and relationship building, which is what we all want.  We will also enjoy fabulous wine, tapas and a few other treats will be planned for the evening (of course non-alcohol beverages will be available).

So, postpone that root canal, register for the AWBO Summer Social and share the invite with your counterparts.  As I always say..."You just never know how that new connection could impact your life and your business."

    Danielle Gaylord,
AWBO President Elect Empowering Women in Business

P.S.   June 3rd-June10th, AWBO will be collecting food for Food Finders Food Bank.  The barrel will be placed inside the doors at Adelino's entrance.  You and your coworkers  can drop nonperishable food items off all week.

    Board Member Spotlight
    Linda Berryman

Linda likes balancing stuff, down to the penny.  She takes this personally, because BBCS Payroll is her business. She started it in 1997 and through hard work, determination and investment in software, equipment and staff, BBCS has seen a 100-fold increase in payroll volume. But Linda is quick to share credit with her employees. “It’s really a team effort.”

The origins of BBCS’s success go back over 30 years ago, when Linda began working in the accounting department of a local law firm.  Since 1997, Linda has put in years of long hours and has built her business from the ground up, “I had done payroll before, but it had gotten, and continues to get, more and more complex.” To prepare for the challenges, Linda became a Certified Payroll Professional (CPP).

“I enjoy this forever-changing industry. The challenge is to keep ahead and become more efficient. We’ve invested a lot of energy and resources to develop procedures, people and get good technology – and it’s paid off.”

Linda’s primary role at BBCS is handling tax compliance. She ensures the timely and accurate submission of all necessary reports and tax deposits for her clients. She also takes care of resolving any issues that come up. “I like making my clients lives easier, and removing these tax compliance headaches from them, is a great way to do it.”

In 2007, BBCS moved into their current location on Veteran Memorial Parkway in the south end of Lafayette, IN.

Linda is a member of the National American Payroll Association and the Lafayette APA chapter, where she has served as president and vice president. She is a member of Greater Lafayette Commerce, Better Business Bureau, AWBO and to the Lafayette Daybreak Rotary where she serves on their annual Toast to Mental Health fund raising committee.

    The Feminine Roadmap for

    Sustainable Success:

Nourishing your life while making a living

Do punishing exercises and torturous diets result in frustration and despair? Has your relationship with food and your body been an emotional irritation, undermining your efforts to thrive? Julia Curry, Eating Psychology Coach, will explain how to integrate mind, emotions, body and spirit into your life in order to achieve balance and fulfillment. Julia will discuss strategies and nutrition principles that challenge your way of eating and weight and health management while factoring in relationships, family, work and sexuality.

Julia Curry is an Eating Psychology Coach, Wellness Advocate and Speaker guiding women (and a few men) toward transforming their relationship with food, making peace with their bodies and discovering a more confident and joyful life.

Julia graduated with a BA in Communications and went on to work with women in various ministry settings over the next 15 years. Along the way she studied nutrition and spiritual formation in pursuit of her own healing. Julia received formal training at The Institute or the Psychology of Eating, finding that her own struggles with emotional eating, anxiety and poor body image have been her best teachers.

    From the President...
    WHY are you in Business???

The Spring Rush is in full gear... flowers blooming, grass to cut, family gatherings, sporting events, phone calls, emails, endless meetings and daily demands.  The balancing act of business and family can bring anxiety.  Remember WHY you are in business.

Your passion, dedication and job skills set you apart to be the best in the industry.  Take a moment for you to refresh, energize and engage life.  Would love to share a motivational book to keep you focused and your life in balance?  Start with Why and Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek.  Both books are highly recommend by another friend/business woman who shares her passion and "Why," in business.

"To be truly successful, hire people who believe what you believe." by Simon Sinek.

    Be passionate about your WHY!
