Next Program: Tuesday, May 14 at Noon
    Pit-falls of Credit-Point Counterpoint
In January we heard about the best way to make sure you are getting the lowest rates on your business credit cards. We had great feedback about how this one presentation was changing the face of businesses for many of our members.
There is a flip side. Cory VanDenBerg, branch manager of the downtown Huntington Branch will be with us Tuesday, May 14th to make us aware of the "Pit-falls of Credit." Come learn firsthand the grave financial mistakes that he sees businesses making with personal credit, to benefit the business because it's instant credit yet has long-term hazardous results. "Sole-proprietors are often the worst offenders, because it's the path of least resistance." If your business is suffering from high credit card debt, come take a break and absorb the information your business needs to get out of debt and start thriving. If you've been there and can mentor a newer member through the process be prepared to add to the discussion. See you on the 14th!

    3 Minute Spotlights:

    • Susannah Hall-Justice, Hall-Justice Law Firm
    • Joanne Webb, Shaklee

    From the President...

    "How's Business?"

A Special "Thank You," to Mayor John Dennis and Mayor Tony Roswarski for speaking in April. Our AWBO Members and guests filled the room to hear the insight of job creation, growth and economic outlook for Tippecanoe County. Wow, feeling blessed to have great leadership in our community with vision for the future!

So, have you run into an old acquaintance, friend or co-worker and the first thing asked, "How's Business?" The past five years answers may have been of frustration, hope and 2013 turned into fantastic. I hope your business has a noticeable difference in making you a better business owner... I'm absolutely stoked about the future!

        From the President...

        Welcome Holly Thomas, President Elect

Hello and happy March! Finally, Spring is just around the corner. I'm sure you agree it will be nice to have warm sunshine and green grass again.

First and foremost I wanted to share my sincere sadness over the loss of our long-term "sister" in AWBO, Linda Erwin. Linda lost her fight to cancer this month. You can read more about her below. It's a reminder to us all how precious life is. Remember to savor life, take care of yourself and make the time to enjoy family and friends.

We also want to update members on a change on the board for this year. Ronda Walsh-Schwab (Edward Jones) decided to step down as President Elect of AWBO so she can focus her energy toward her growing business. We're grateful for Ronda's participation on the board over the past several months and thank her for her contribution. We're also pleased to announce thatHolly Thomas (FC Tucker) has agreed to take that torch and join the board as President Elect. Holly is a personal friend, colleague, and former neighbor and I'm so excited she's agreed to join us in this capacity. Holly has been involved in AWBO since 1992. Over the years, she has served on the AWBO Board of Directors and was the Vice President of Programs. Holly's passion for our community and organization will bring inspiration to our current Board of Directors.

Thank you Ronda and Holly. We hope the decision is a good one for both of you!

February Program: Tuesday, February 12 at Noon
          Speak with Confidence

As professionals, we often find ourselves in situations -planned or impromptu- where we must address a group of individuals or a large audience. Whether we are asked to give a presentation or speak off the cuff, such situations can elicit panic and anxiety. How often have you heard someone assert that they LOVE to speak in front of a group? It’s rare.

Join us on Tuesday, February 5th to hear Clyde Hughesfrom Toastmasters discuss the advantages of improving your public speaking skills. Clyde will provide tips on better public speaking and presentation skills, "tricks of the trade" and "speaking off the cuff" as it pertains to professional settings, elevator speeches and table topic discussions. He plans to incorporate a few volunteers into his
presentation while emphasizing how “fun” public speaking can be. This presentation will not be an ‘intro to public speaking’, but tailored to professionals who have experience standing before a group. Please come with questions.

Clyde Hughes is a Freelance Writer for newspapers, magazines and websites writing on topics ranging from sports, politics, urban affairs and minority issues. He produces weekly columns on the NCAA Division III football and currently works in the Marketing & Media Office at Purdue University.

          From the President...

MAKING A DIFFERENCE...So much to be thankful for!
On January 25th, AWBO sponsored the Food Finders Mobile Food Pantry at Evangelical Christian Church. Items distributed included frozen meat, baked goods, beverages, vegetables, snacks, fruit, cereal and personal hygiene products. AWBO was able to make a difference to 204 families representing 656 individuals! Our sincere gratitude to ECC for providing a wonderful warm indoor facility, tables and chairs for our event...and to Food Finders for coordinating such an well-run operation.

Your efforts of saving water bottles were seen in action... filled with laundry soap for families and a HOT item to many. What a humbling experience - there are no words to describe my feeling and the out pouring of comments by the many volunteers who worked the Food Finders Mobile Food Pantry. There were over 25 Volunteers who came out to help. THANK YOU, to ALL that volunteered your time, your dedication and contribution of funds to make this event happen. AWBO, you ladies have A Heart of Gold!

January Program: Tuesday, Jan. 8 at Noon
            Credit Card Reality Check

The convenience of accepting credit card payments at your business comes at a price. The threat of credit card fraud is very real. But not accepting credit card payments is not an option for many businesses today.

Do you know what you’re paying to process each transaction?  There are over 249 credit cards that can walk into your business, each of them carry a cost.... Interchange Cost. The costs range from .23 cents for debit transactions to 2.89% for American Express. Do you ever wonder why that is?

Do you get frustrated every month when your statement comes and you don't understand it? Are you curious how new fees show up each month on your statement? Have you ever been asked to pay a PCI Compliance fee? Batch fee? Statement fee? Monthly fee? Annual fee?

Daphne Larson from Heartland Payment Systems will be with us on Tuesday Jan. 8th to explain what we need to know when considering merchants processing systems. She will tell us what to look for - what to avoid. Spend a little time with AWBO and you will be sure to start your new year hitting the ground running!

October Program: Tuesday, Dec. 11 at Noon
              It's Our Annual Holiday Auction!

Come help us celebrate the season December 11th at MCL as we enjoy our annual AWBO auction and raffle event to benefit Cary Home for Girls. Many of the girls come to Cary Home with nothing but what they are wearing. Cary Home is funded by Tippecanoe Co., but as we know, funds do run dry especially as the year ends. Therefore as an AWBO  member you have the ability to have tremendous impact on a young woman at such a pivotal and crucial time in her life.

You will be able to shop for great gift ideas with the convenience of having everything together in one location. All the while enjoying some much needed time out of the office! Many local businesses have donated some great auction items: gift baskets, art work, one of a kind items, and even things for the kids. Bring your Christmas shopping list and and be prepared to buy American. Better yet, see something you'd like for your own stocking? We have items for that too!  And it all goes to benefit a great cause: Cary Home Home for Girls.

Auction and shopping begins at Noon at MCL Restaurant & Bakery.

              Make a Donation
              Dear AWBO members,
I really appreciate your help in pulling the auction together. As many of you know, I just recently returned to AWBO after being sick for a year and a half. Jumping in to being President Elect including organizing the auction, is a stretch for me at this time. Please invite your friends to the event, and if you know others, members or nonmembers who want to make a donation please connect with them. Please give me a call @ 426-7511 or email me @rondawalshschwab@gmail.com with any questions, or special needs.
              Thank you,
              Ronda Walsh Schwab, President Elect

              From the President...

Wishing you the best this Holiday Season~
Around the Holidays, we all love to reflect on the year and reminisce about our Business, Family, Friends, and the importance that each one touched in our life. While it's natural to focus our energy on big celebrations, I hope that each of you have something to be thankful for that has touched your heart.

It is the outreach and dedication of all you AWBO Women that just amazes me. I am so thankful to have you in my life, your friendship and to witness the acts of kindness from each of you. This year, AWBO will Sponsor a Holiday Auction and Raffle that benefits Cary Home for Girls. Please join us December 11th. With you help, these funds will make a difference in these young girls lives. If you wish to donate an item, please contact Ronda Walsh-Schwaband she will be happy to arrange a drop off or pick up of your item before the day of our event.  I applaud your time and energy that each of you give to AWBO during the holidays!

See you soon for lots of fun and fellowship at our Holiday Auction and Raffle!

              Happy and Safe Travels,
              Tammy Foley

              Board Spotlight: Danielle Gaylord

Danielle Gaylord is co-owner of Signature Organizing Service S.O.S. She and her partners, Janet Yaninek &Rita Smeyak, began their service together as the leadership team of the YWCA Domestic Violence Program. Their primary responsibility was to assist women and children fleeing domestic abuse and help them secure safe housing. Survivors of abuse often leave everything behind. The survivor’s needs were often met by donations made by individuals overwhelmed with downsizing or the loss of a loved one, and wished for their possessions to be put to good use. Danielle, Janet and Rita recognized a need, and after many years of service, decided it was time to create S.O.S.

As Professional Organizers and Senior Move Managers, they do more than just help individuals get organized or move into more accommodating housing, they create a lasting experience and alleviate the stress associated with clutter, lack of systems or moving out of the home where children were raised. They love what they do and would like to share their knowledge and expertise with you or someone you know who may be struggling.

                From the President...

                AWBO Ladies:
The Election Season is in full swing and regardless of political affiliation, the discussion of more jobs and entrepreneurial spirit in American leads each conversation.  In October, our own AWBO Members shared their inspiring stories and journey to success.

Jan Myers noted as a Free Advocate, shared her story that in 1970's a required  Dress Code for Professional Women in Business. Think about it, when did you last wear pantyhose for work? The past thirty-five years has brought many changes in business. Jan wants all of us to be, "Free, to be who we want to be... make your own Butterfly in life."

Joann Webb (Founding Member of AWBO) a very proud of women in business. She stated that AWBO helped her with Growth and Personal Development when she began her career. Her goal was to provide supplemental income for her family.

KJ Nutt (Founding Member of AWBO) described how times had changed.  How difficult it was for Women to apply for a Business Loan and expressed  she is "Thankful for Women in Business of today, to have a VOICE!"

I found each story to be heart warming. I hope that American continues to embrace Entrepreneurial Business Ownership and Empowering Women for Success.

PRETTY IN PINK ~ YOU BET!  Our November meeting will feature Cancer Awareness.  Each of us have been touched by someone who has been diagnosed with Cancer.  Cancer Survivors are courageous and their fortitude is amazing!   Come visit- bring a friend and WEAR SOMETHING PINK!

I encourage all of you to have a voice, embrace your Personal Growth and be your own Butterfly!

Look forward to seeing you in November,

                Tammy Foley

                Board Spotlight: Susan Benedict
Susan Benedict is AWBO's Co-VP of Membership and Lafayette’s only Certified Kitchen Designer. What that means for her customers is that Design Alternatives has an extensive client fact finding process about how their clients want their space to work, look and feel. Aesthetics play a role but the room also has to be functional above all else. Some want the “Wow”; others just want their oven and dishwasher doors not to open up into the same space! Her company now looks at their projects through a different pair of glasses with Aging in Place work. “We are trying to get our clients to be pro-active about purchases they make today that may not fit their changing health needs in the future.”

                Panel: AWBO's Beginnings

Think being a woman business owner takes tremendous energy and effort in today's world? Take a step back in time for a few minutes, come have lunch with us and learn what it was like for the women who pioneered what AWBO is today. We will have a guest panel of founding members as well as long time members share with us what it was like 30 years ago to be a woman in business. Since this is the start of our new year, also please plan to share what AWBO means for you and what it has done for your business.

                3 Minute Spotlights:

                • Ronda Wash Schwab, Edward Jones
                • Amanda Snider, Metamorphic Fitness

                From the NEW President...

When you are running your business, squeezing a few minutes into each day just to catch up, the world around you can be daunting. It's no wonder that invitations to spend a few hours out of the office can be easily pushed aside.

Don't let the daily grind rob you of the many opportunities to learn something new - and perhaps more important, meet someone new. October begins our NEW year for AWBO - a NEW Board of Directors, NEW Advertising Opportunities, NEW Social Events and the reNEWal of your Membership.

Meetings represent the opportunity to gain information with the wide variety of topics presented by the Programs Committee. And you can let AWBO know who YOU are by signing up for a Three Minute Spotlight.

As Women Business Owners we are self driven, financially astute and good risk assessors. You are invaluable to your business and to AWBO.

I encourage you to learn something new and make contact with someone wonderful that makes your day! See you, October 9th at MCL Restaurant & Bakery.

It is a pleasure to serve this year as your President.

Here’s to hoping we see a lot more AWBO businesses in the news soon!

                Yours,

                Tammy Foley

and a Farewell from our 2012 Pres...

                Hello Everyone,

WOW, this year has gone by in a flash. I cannot truly express how honored I feel to have served as your President. Being on the AWBO Board these last three years has had such an impact on my personal development as a business owner. The knowledge I gained from working with so many amazing women on the board is invaluable.  And, for that, I am so thankful to the women who shared this journey with me.  I have such a great respect for all of you.  Being a business owner is no easy task and I am grateful to have such a wonderful community of business owners I can go to for guidance and support.

I know that great things are in store for AWBO under the guidance of the new board.

                Best wishes,

                Julie Rubsam

                  A Word from Our President

                  Hello!

I hope you made the time to join us at the August meeting.Liz Nichols did a fantastic job of informing us about how to better position our business to get news coverage. I especially appreciated her taking the time to present to our group so soon after having her baby!

Liz helped us understand how the process of choosing a story happens at the station and how better to position our business to be covered in the news and as the "Go To" business for our industry. Hopefully, you were able to join us for her presentation, but if not here are a few of the things we learned. As someone who often worries that I am sending TOO many emails about events, I was happy to hear that sending 3-4 emails is not too many. Things that could help get your story covered are; stories that affect a large number of people, stories dealing with public safety, and stories that will get people talking. And, if you want to be that "Go To" business, you need to be ready and willing to go on camera on short notice. So, always be CAMERA READY!

Here’s to hoping we see a lot more AWBO businesses in the news soon!

                  Yours,

                  Julie Rubsam

                    A Word from Our President

                    Hello Everyone,
What an eye opening presentation by our guest speaker Debbie Elsner. Debbie shared with us her presentation: HR 101, The Top 10 Things You Should Know. As business owners, we must be aware of many laws and regulations. The one thing Debbie repeated over and over was that once you have rules established within your business, you always need to follow your own rules!  Other great takeaways from the presentation are; Document Everything and Have an Employee Manual.  I truly appreciated Debbie’s presentation, it was one that shouldn't have been missed.

                    Yours,

                    Julie Rubsam

If you missed it, the AWBO 30th Anniversary Celebration was held at the Best Western Convention Center. Our own, LeAnn Lehr from Cato's took the podium. Models strutted their stuff to entertain us on the what is new and fun in Fashion at Cato's.

In honor of 30th Anniversary Celebration, a slide presentation displayed the history of AWBO. Past Presidents of AWBO were asked to stand and be recognized. Julie Rubsam made presentations to the Founding Members of AWBO with flowers and engraved vases celebrating our 30th Anniversary.

A special thanks to Julie Rubsam, the Board Members of AWBO, Best Western Convention Center, Michael Dick Photography, Chico's, Cato's, our Model; Kayla Feuer, Rhonda Feuer, Holly Maliziola, Jan Nielsen, Angela Tamer, Susan Benedict, Joanne Webb and Pam Rhode-Thalls along the many wonderful Members who donated Door Prizes; Bark Avenue Day Spa, Creative Memories, USBorne Books, Pampered Chef, Ramz Emporium, Longaberger Company, Stanley Steamer, Dream Dinners, Geb*Art Strategic Communications, Lafayette PC, Mary Kay, Design Alternatives, Coldwell Banker Shook, Lafayette Hearing Center and Jane Kenny.
