    -------------------------------------------
    Hi AWBO members and non-members!

I am on the hospitality committee and I take AWBO and my office very serious.  Let me tell you what makes it important.  Meeting with members monthly builds friendships.  I meet new women who have used  their imaginations to bring income to their households.  Many of them have helped me in various ways.

Another wonderful thing about AWBO, are the speakers. One of them was Tenecia Waddell.  She was this years YWCA Woman of Innovation Honoree.  She is a police officer on the Purdue Police Department.  Although her talk was entitled "Safety in the work place", I learned some very helpful things about keeping safe while shopping, as well as in the parking lot.  "Whenever being confronted by an attacker, always look them in the face. Don't let them feel you fear."  Same goes for the work place...how to handle unwanted advances/harassment.

It is wonderful to see so many ladies visiting our luncheon meeting and becoming members, "Welcome to each of you!  See you soon?"

    Tenecia Waddell

Join AWBO on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 12pm and hear Tenecia Waddell of the Purdue Police Department speak on

    “Safety in the Work Place”.

Tenecia Waddell has been an officer with the Purdue Police Department since 2008, being the first Afro-American Woman on the force. Prior to Purdue, she was a corrections officer with the Tippecanoe County Sherriff's Department for seven years. From the President...

Great Leaders are Students of Success

What is your roll in business?  Whether your roll is to help others, create opportunity or make money, you need to have crystal clear purpose.  As a business owner you communicate, have a vision, are goal oriented.  You have created a strategic plan, have empathy, synergistic thinking and a time master.  Great leaders are students of success.  You understand that success is a verb and take action.
As our marketplace evolves, your leadership and vision will create success!

    Summer Social follow up...
On Tuesday, June 10th, 50 plus AWBO members and guests gathered at Adelino's for our Annual AWBO Summer Social. Our goal for the evening was to learn more about the women we see each month at our regular AWBO meetings as well as meet other professional women and promote the benefits of AWBO. I am happy to report, based on the feedback from those who attended, that we were successful in that mission. Finding time to develop meaningful professional relationships can be very difficult. A purposeful networking event is just the beginning and hopefully you have had opportunities to follow up with new contacts.

    Summer Social

Have you registered for this month's AWBO meeting...the Summer Social?  It's not too late!! Please take some time right now to click on the link and register.  We are going to have an amazing time with appetizers, drinks, networking and be prepared to "Step and Repeat" as your photos are taken!! Finally, forward the invite to your counterparts.

    --------------------------------------------
    From the President Elect...

When invited to a "networking event", we do one of 2 things: 1) We meet the opportunity with full enthusiasm or 2) We schedule that root canal thinking that a visit to the dentist may be less painful than milling around a room full of confident business owners.  Truth is...and you have to admit it....we all fall somewhere in between. One reason networking can result in feelings of anxiety is because past experience informs us that 1) Overly aggressive characters really love to talk about themselves and we struggle to leave an impression and 2) We throw ourselves into the snake pit and there are no rules to follow - it's "Survival of the fittest".

On Tuesday, June 10th we will challenge that paradigm and hopefully establish a new standard for networking.  We promise not to tape anything to your backside for you to guess what cartoon character you are.  We will, however, create a platform that will foster quality conversations and relationship building, which is what we all want.  We will also enjoy fabulous wine, tapas and a few other treats will be planned for the evening (of course non-alcohol beverages will be available).

So, postpone that root canal, register for the AWBO Summer Social and share the invite with your counterparts.  As I always say..."You just never know how that new connection could impact your life and your business."

    Danielle Gaylord,
AWBO President Elect Empowering Women in Business

P.S.   June 3rd-June10th, AWBO will be collecting food for Food Finders Food Bank.  The barrel will be placed inside the doors at Adelino's entrance.  You and your coworkers  can drop nonperishable food items off all week.

    Board Member Spotlight
    Linda Berryman

Linda likes balancing stuff, down to the penny.  She takes this personally, because BBCS Payroll is her business. She started it in 1997 and through hard work, determination and investment in software, equipment and staff, BBCS has seen a 100-fold increase in payroll volume. But Linda is quick to share credit with her employees. “It’s really a team effort.”

The origins of BBCS’s success go back over 30 years ago, when Linda began working in the accounting department of a local law firm.  Since 1997, Linda has put in years of long hours and has built her business from the ground up, “I had done payroll before, but it had gotten, and continues to get, more and more complex.” To prepare for the challenges, Linda became a Certified Payroll Professional (CPP).

“I enjoy this forever-changing industry. The challenge is to keep ahead and become more efficient. We’ve invested a lot of energy and resources to develop procedures, people and get good technology – and it’s paid off.”

Linda’s primary role at BBCS is handling tax compliance. She ensures the timely and accurate submission of all necessary reports and tax deposits for her clients. She also takes care of resolving any issues that come up. “I like making my clients lives easier, and removing these tax compliance headaches from them, is a great way to do it.”

In 2007, BBCS moved into their current location on Veteran Memorial Parkway in the south end of Lafayette, IN.

Linda is a member of the National American Payroll Association and the Lafayette APA chapter, where she has served as president and vice president. She is a member of Greater Lafayette Commerce, Better Business Bureau, AWBO and to the Lafayette Daybreak Rotary where she serves on their annual Toast to Mental Health fund raising committee.

    The Feminine Roadmap for

    Sustainable Success:

Nourishing your life while making a living

Do punishing exercises and torturous diets result in frustration and despair? Has your relationship with food and your body been an emotional irritation, undermining your efforts to thrive? Julia Curry, Eating Psychology Coach, will explain how to integrate mind, emotions, body and spirit into your life in order to achieve balance and fulfillment. Julia will discuss strategies and nutrition principles that challenge your way of eating and weight and health management while factoring in relationships, family, work and sexuality.

Julia Curry is an Eating Psychology Coach, Wellness Advocate and Speaker guiding women (and a few men) toward transforming their relationship with food, making peace with their bodies and discovering a more confident and joyful life.

Julia graduated with a BA in Communications and went on to work with women in various ministry settings over the next 15 years. Along the way she studied nutrition and spiritual formation in pursuit of her own healing. Julia received formal training at The Institute or the Psychology of Eating, finding that her own struggles with emotional eating, anxiety and poor body image have been her best teachers.

    From the President...
    WHY are you in Business???

The Spring Rush is in full gear... flowers blooming, grass to cut, family gatherings, sporting events, phone calls, emails, endless meetings and daily demands.  The balancing act of business and family can bring anxiety.  Remember WHY you are in business.

Your passion, dedication and job skills set you apart to be the best in the industry.  Take a moment for you to refresh, energize and engage life.  Would love to share a motivational book to keep you focused and your life in balance?  Start with Why and Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek.  Both books are highly recommend by another friend/business woman who shares her passion and "Why," in business.

"To be truly successful, hire people who believe what you believe." by Simon Sinek.

    Be passionate about your WHY!

    Social Media:

How to use it for your business

Confused by all the latest in Social Media? Which is best? Twitter, Facebook, Linked-In, Pinterest, just to name a few? Join AWBO on Tuesday, April 8th as we welcome Marci Morin as she explains how social media is a good thing to use as a tool for marketing, connecting and more for your business. We look forward to seeing you at MCL Cafeteria at 11:30am for lunch and networking with our program starting at 12pm.

Marci Morin, Account Executive at Olsten Staffing Services, began her interest with social media on Twitter. She’s been involved with numerous social media campaigns including GLC’s Dancing in the Streets, Olsten Staffing, and Stylish Organization by RachelMae. She’s also implemented Social Media Marketing for many organizations. She understands the power of social media and how it can help impact a business or organization. Ashley Bigelow

"Your home is a major investment. All of its nuances, quirks, and things that go "thump" in the night give your home its unique character. Links Residential Property Management, LLC (Links RPM)  studies your home and gives it the individualized attention it-and you-deserve."

Ashley came up with this idea as she saw her own parents aging and needing assistance with the care of their home.  "I know they are not unique, and that there are lots of folks out there in a similar situation. Additionally, my mother-in-law lives in South Carolina, and my husband, her only child, worries about her ability to care for her house - he wishes there was someone in her area he could communicate with and be assured that her house is safe and well maintained."

My goal is to team up with homeowners so that they can live in their own lives as long a possible without the hassle of actually maintaining the home.  I oversee the care of the home, allowing homeowners the freedom to relax and spend time doing what they enjoy: living life.  "Peace of mind is what our company is all about."

    Need a Staff or Intern?

Find out what CCO has to offer

This year we have learned about “generational differences” and how to “connect the dots” within the workplace. Now it is time to move forward with what we have learned and connect with one of the greatest resources available to us as local women business owners - Purdue University.

There are thousands of young, educated, eager to work individuals pouring into the workforce every year.  Student interns and newly graduated from Purdue University are ready to share their skills and experience in a professional environment. Why toss a ‘help wanted’ out into the ether when you can target your search to a specific group of qualified individuals? Their fresh perspective and understanding of technology may speak directly to a need you may have.

Susan Hychka, Associate Director of the Center for Career Opportunities (CCO), Purdue University, will share with AWBO members the many ways in which the CCO can assist employers with their recruitment and hiring needs. Who knows…this link may be where your next best intern or staff person is found.

Thank you for your dedication in AWBO. Our Programs Committee has exciting speakers each month to make you/your business more successful.  Your membership in AWBO is important, as our organization works on the mission to Empower Women Business Owners for today and tomorrow.  Your outreach, to invite other Women Business Owners to visit our membership meeting, is vital in the growth of our organization.  Please feel free to invite guests to join us at MCL Cafeteria the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

    Amanda Snider

Amanda Snider is AWBO’s Co-Vice President of Membership, this year. She is a NASM certified personal trainer and the owner of Metamorphic Fitness. Amanda is originally from the small town of Three Oaks, Michigan and came to the Lafayette area to attend Purdue University. She
graduated in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and completed her master’s degree in 2006 in Health and Kinesiology, specializing in Sport and Exercise Psychology. She started Metamorphic Fitness, an all-women’s personal training studio, in 2009.

Below are some common questions that Amanda has been asked regarding her fitness business:

Q: What makes Metamorphic Fitness different from other gyms/ fitness centers?

A: Metamorphic is an all-women’s facility with female certified personal trainers only. It is an inviting place where women need not feel self-conscious as they might at a large fitness facility.
Metamorphic is about more than just working out though. I want every woman who comes in to be able to translate what she has learned into a lifestyle change where her whole family can benefit.

Q: Where are all the fitness machines?

A: I don’t need them! When I was working in a crowded gym, I would take my client over to a small corner with nothing but a pair of dumbbells and give her an amazing workout. This is where I first discovered the benefits of functional and bodyweight training. All of my training focuses on engaging the core in order to perform the movement, which produces good results because you are always working the core. It is also inexpensive, and I can teach my client a workout she can do anywhere.

Q: Who is your typical client?

A: Women who want more accountability and do not want the typical gym environment. I offer two types of services: personal training and small group training. My small group training is
increasingly popular with the 20s to early 30s age group, while my personal training is more popular with women in their 50s and older.

Q: What do you love about being a personal trainer?

A: I typically meet my clients when they have reached one of the lowest points in their lives.  Sometimes my services are a last resort for these women after they have tried everything else
without success. They are often unhappy with their weight, insecure, and ready for change. I love when I can help empower this woman to feel strong and confident through the physical and
mental transformation of a healthy lifestyle. I can almost see her light up from the inside when she realizes that anything is possible.

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, January 14th at Noon:
    Generational Differences

Do you find it hard to work with younger employees? Do you get tired of the old guys telling what you “should” be doing? How do you handle the generations in the work place? To find out the answers to these questions and more, come hear our January guest speaker, Robby Slaughter, as he enlightens us on this topic.  Lunch on your own starts at 11:30am with the meeting starting at 12pm to give our guest plenty of time to share his insights and answer our questions.

Robby Slaughter is a workflow and
productivity expert. He is a nationally known speaker on topics related to personal productivity, corporate efficiency and employee engagement. Robby is the founder of AccelaWork, a company which provides speakers and consultants to a wide variety of organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, regional non-profits, small businesses and individual entrepreneurs.

Robby has written numerous articles for national magazines and has over one hundred published articles. Robby is also the author of several books, including Failure: The Secret to Success. He has also been interviewed by international news outlets including the Wall Street Journal. Robby’s newest book is The How-To Guide for Generations at Work.

    From the President...
    My Fellow Board Members,

It is with a heavy, heavy heart and many tears that I need to resign as President.  The events of November 17th's tornado taking my home and office have pushed we well past overload.

I had such a pile of dreams this year that I need to shelve, at least for now.  Can't thank you enough for being there for me personally and professionally even before the storm, let alone how you stepped up to the plate immediately after the storm!  Words will never be able to describe my gratitude.

AWBO needs a leader who is there mentally and physically and I just can't be that right now. Thank you for understanding.

Thanks to each and everyone of you for stepping up to the plate in the name of AWBO.

    Special Thanks...

Thank you to all who were a part of the 2013 AWBO Holiday Auction and Drawing.  Through your hard work, donations, ticket purchases and bidding, we were able to raise more than $2600 for the Cary Home.  This donation will go a long way to help purchase supplies, clothing and other needs for the kids that the Cary Home helps.  Thank you for making this event such a great success.

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, December 10th at Noon:
    AWBO Holiday
    Auction & Drawing

The Holiday Auction and Drawing is coming up fast!!  It's the holiday season and that means time for the annual AWBO Holiday Auction and Drawing.  Please join us on Tuesday December 10th from 11:30 to 1:00 at the MCL Restaurant and Bakery in West Lafayette.  Invite your friends, family, employees and clients to celebrate the holiday season.  All proceeds from the Holiday Auction and Drawing benefit the Cary Home.

Also if you still want to donate or help with the event please contact Jenna Isch at jisch@farmersagent.com

    From the President...
It's almost time for AWBO's annual benefit auction for Cary Girls Home located on 18th Street in Lafayette.  Our president, Susan Benedict, asked me to tell you a little bit about it.  Our goal, through this auction, is to present the home with a nice amount that will supply the needs of the young girls who might find themselves uprooted from their homes very abruptly.  There are currently 3 girls there but that number can change daily.

The workers love to have people go in and work with the girls making crafts (which I love to do) and other skills to encourage them.  I know the money that will be raised, will go for paper, markers, paint, glue and other art/crafting supplies.  But many times the home runs low, or completely out on vital items such as clothes, winter coats, shoes, toiletries and backpacks.  Let's set them up with what they need, and some want's, for the girls at Cary Girls Home!!

Please mark it on your calendar, bring a purse full of money or your checkbook and don't miss this action packed event full of exciting things.

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, November 12th at Noon:
      Moneyball Panel

AWBO's book review panels have always been wonderful, yet challenging. Join us for an engaging conversation as we 'switch it up' and change from book to movie.

Sports metaphors are often used in a business setting to emphasize a point.  For example, “Go for the gold”, “keep your eye on the ball” and  “knock it out of the park” are references we identify with striving for a successful outcome.

What if the business scenario is less than desirable? What if your business needs to make a “game change” or “put in another player”?  Do you “come out swinging” or prefer to “sit on the bench”?  We will discuss these questions and deeper business related points highlighted in the movie Moneyball for AWBO Programs on November 12th.

We hope to hit a 'grand slam' with November programming. There is 1 MAJOR message to pick up on.  Let’s see who will “take the ball and run with it”.

      From the President...

I am thankful for women who are warriors-women who have paved the way for us to put the female demographic on a more level playing field.  Women who suffered personal pain to allow us to  live in a free country, women who have lowered the glass ceiling.

Think about those women, brave enough to blindly follow their husbands to cross the ocean on a ship-there was no questioning the decision back then- it's what you did: you followed your husband.  There was no guarantee the ship would even make it to the new world!  The movie "Abraham Lincoln" quickly points out how absurd the idea was to men that Women and Blacks should ever to able to vote.

Fast forward 200 years later.  The Suffragettes made it possible for us to be able to vote.  These women put their health, mental well-being and character on the line within society.  I think of Rosa Parks who bravely stood her ground by not relinquishing her bus seat, knowing a trip to the jailhouse was eminent.

When I started my career in the 8O's, talk of breaking the glass ceiling was all you heard about.  I'm thankful for those women who have selfishly became trailblazers to allow our paychecks to be more equal to men for the same level of work.  We still have a lot of work to do.

My thoughts turn to Mary Kay Ash founder of Mary Kay  Cosmetics was the first woman to own a Fortune 500 company.  I see Mary Kay as a burning example of women who knew how to get things done without making a person feel inferior.  One of her motto's was "always sandwich criticism in between two big slabs of love."

I'm thankful for the women who, 31 plus years ago felt it was vital that women business owners have a respite from doing day to day business.  Have you looked within our group of women trail blazers who could mentor you through this current or future rough patch?

For us older members - when is the last time you fought with technology?  Was it five minutes ago?  Have you considered partnering up with a younger member - I bet they can answer your question in 2 seconds!   We all have skills and lessons within this group that we never tap.  I'm thankful for women who put my heart at rest because of who you have become, someone I can lean on. What goldmine have you left untapped within AWBO?

      Susan Benedict
      AWBO President
      Empowering Women in Business

              Board Member Spotlight
                     Susan Benedict

Susan Benedict is AWBO's newest president and is the owner of Design Alternatives. Her company celebrated a 19 year anniversary in September and she has been in the Kitchen and Bath Industry nearly 30 years. That's a lot of industry experience. But what does that mean for you?
Susan helps clients maintain sanity within their living space especially when they can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

*Susan was told by a new client recently that she was called in because she is known for "getting the most out of every inch of space".
*She is more than a kitchen and bath designer: laundry rooms, home offices, closets, commercial restaurants. If it involves space planning, she has done it. Her ultimate goal is not to sell products. Susan wants her customer's to have a good working functional floor plan that meets their needs before they ever start shopping for products. Many customers confuse they likes or tastes for what actual function they need. Form follows function still applies.

She often plays "marriage counselor" by listening to both parties before producing a compromise.

*More and more of her customer's are hiring her to have the hard conversations with tradesmen and contractor's when there is a dispute. "Being a middle child stereotypes me as a mediator, but I guess it holds true here as well. Sometimes it just takes a third party to have an objective viewpoint when a project has stalled. Someone who understands both sides-Dreams vs. the Reality".
