    Panel: AWBO's Beginnings

Think being a woman business owner takes tremendous energy and effort in today's world? Take a step back in time for a few minutes, come have lunch with us and learn what it was like for the women who pioneered what AWBO is today. We will have a guest panel of founding members as well as long time members share with us what it was like 30 years ago to be a woman in business. Since this is the start of our new year, also please plan to share what AWBO means for you and what it has done for your business.

    3 Minute Spotlights:

    • Amanda Snider, Metamorphic Fitness

    From the NEW President...

When you are running your business, squeezing a few minutes into each day just to catch up, the world around you can be daunting. It's no wonder that invitations to spend a few hours out of the office can be easily pushed aside.

Don't let the daily grind rob you of the many opportunities to learn something new - and perhaps more important, meet someone new. October begins our NEW year for AWBO - a NEW Board of Directors, NEW Advertising Opportunities, NEW Social Events and the reNEWal of your Membership.

Meetings represent the opportunity to gain information with the wide variety of topics presented by the Programs Committee. And you can let AWBO know who YOU are by signing up for a Three Minute Spotlight.

As Women Business Owners we are self driven, financially astute and good risk assessors. You are invaluable to your business and to AWBO.

I encourage you to learn something new and make contact with someone wonderful that makes your day! See you, October 9th at MCL Restaurant & Bakery.

It is a pleasure to serve this year as your President.

Here’s to hoping we see a lot more AWBO businesses in the news soon!

    Yours,

    Tammy Foley

and a Farewell from our 2012 Pres...

    Hello Everyone,

WOW, this year has gone by in a flash. I cannot truly express how honored I feel to have served as your President. Being on the AWBO Board these last three years has had such an impact on my personal development as a business owner. The knowledge I gained from working with so many amazing women on the board is invaluable.  And, for that, I am so thankful to the women who shared this journey with me.  I have such a great respect for all of you.  Being a business owner is no easy task and I am grateful to have such a wonderful community of business owners I can go to for guidance and support.

I know that great things are in store for AWBO under the guidance of the new board.

    Best wishes,

    Julie Rubsam

      A Word from Our President

      Hello!

I hope you made the time to join us at the August meeting.Liz Nichols did a fantastic job of informing us about how to better position our business to get news coverage. I especially appreciated her taking the time to present to our group so soon after having her baby!

Liz helped us understand how the process of choosing a story happens at the station and how better to position our business to be covered in the news and as the "Go To" business for our industry. Hopefully, you were able to join us for her presentation, but if not here are a few of the things we learned. As someone who often worries that I am sending TOO many emails about events, I was happy to hear that sending 3-4 emails is not too many. Things that could help get your story covered are; stories that affect a large number of people, stories dealing with public safety, and stories that will get people talking. And, if you want to be that "Go To" business, you need to be ready and willing to go on camera on short notice. So, always be CAMERA READY!

Here’s to hoping we see a lot more AWBO businesses in the news soon!

      Yours,

      Julie Rubsam

        A Word from Our President

        Hello Everyone,
What an eye opening presentation by our guest speaker Debbie Elsner. Debbie shared with us her presentation: HR 101, The Top 10 Things You Should Know. As business owners, we must be aware of many laws and regulations. The one thing Debbie repeated over and over was that once you have rules established within your business, you always need to follow your own rules!  Other great takeaways from the presentation are; Document Everything and Have an Employee Manual.  I truly appreciated Debbie’s presentation, it was one that shouldn't have been missed.

        Yours,

        Julie Rubsam

Thank you to all that attended the Summer Social to enjoy food, fashion, friends and a lot of FUN! If you missed it, the AWBO 30th Anniversary Celebration was held at the Best Western Convention Center. Our own, LeAnn Lehr from Cato's took the podium. Models strutted their stuff to entertain us on the what is new and fun in Fashion at Cato's.

In honor of 30th Anniversary Celebration, a slide presentation displayed the history of AWBO. Past Presidents of AWBO were asked to stand and be recognized. Julie Rubsam made presentations to the Founding Members of AWBO with flowers and engraved vases celebrating our 30th Anniversary.

A special thanks to Julie Rubsam, the Board Members of AWBO, Best Western Convention Center, Michael Dick Photography, Chico's, Cato's, our Model; Kayla Feuer, Rhonda Feuer, Holly Maliziola, Jan Nielsen, Angela Tamer, Susan Benedict, Joanne Webb and Pam Rhode-Thalls along the many wonderful Members who donated Door Prizes; Bark Avenue Day Spa, Creative Memories, USBorne Books, Pampered Chef, Ramz Emporium, Longaberger Company, Stanley Steamer, Dream Dinners, Geb*Art Strategic Communications, Lafayette PC, Mary Kay, Design Alternatives, Coldwell Banker Shook, Lafayette Hearing Center and Jane Kenny. Hello everyone!

The Association of Women Business Owner’s 30th Anniversary Celebration was amazing! Thank you Tammy Foley for organizing such a wonderful event. I greatly enjoyed meeting so many of our past members, especially our founding members  Thirty years ago, 60 women came together to create an organization to support, educate, and encourage women business owners. And, over the years, AWBO has touched the lives of hundreds of women. I am honored to be a part of such a great group of truly amazing women and I look forward to seeing where this organization is in 30 more years.

          Yours,

          Julie Rubsam

          A Word from our President...

          Hello Everyone,

May was a great meeting. Whether you are thinking about starting a business or have been in business for years, SCORE is available to help you with Free and Confidential Business Mentoring. They can help with questions about licensing, permits, business plans, marketing plans, financial forecasting, staffing questions, long term planning, or any other area of starting and running a business. According to Jerry Holsapple, SCORE is about How to Start, How to Maintain, and How to End a business. Running a business isn’t always an easy task. It is nice to know that you can call SCORE when you need some guidance.

I don’t know about you, but I cannot believe it is June already and our 30th Anniversary Celebration is just around the corner. It is going to be an AMAZING evening.  Looking forward to seeing all of you there!

          A Word from our President...

I want to begin by thanking Isabel HogueTammy FoleyJennifer WeidaNicole GebhardtJan Nielsen, and Kerri Wagner for volunteering to be our panel of speakers for our April program.  If you haven’t had a chance to read the "No B.S. Price Strategy: The Ultimate No Holds Barred, Kick Butt, Take No Prisoners Guide to Profits, Power, and Prosperity", it is definitely worth a read.  I had several Ah Hah moments during the presentation and I want to share two:  1. That Price is not the top reason a customer will chose to do business with you and 2. That I should not set my prices based on what I would pay because I am not my customer. For those of you who joined us for this presentation, you can share your Ah Hah moments on the AWBO website message board (www.awbo.org) or on the  AWBO Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/AWBOLafayette).

Just a reminder that next month we will celebrate 30 YEARS OF AWBO!  We hope to see all of our current and past members there, so start spreading the word!  Stay tuned for more information about our celebration from Tammy Foley, our President Elect.

          A Word from our President...

Hello Everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying the beginning of Spring!

As I mention at our meetings each month, I really, REALLY enjoy hearing who is celebrating a Business Anniversary. This past month, we had three members celebrating 20 or more years in business. That is WONDERFUL and very inspiring!

WOW, we had a very informative presentation from Dan Ridenour in March. His explanation of how your FICO score is determined was very eye opening for me and for many others in the audience. He had a lot of great tips on how to increase your FICO score in a short period of time. Good information to know should you be thinking of applying for a business loan anytime soon. If you happened to not be at our meeting, or if you were and did not have a chance to pick up one of Dan’s books, these items can be purchased on his website.  http://cbfcoach.com/products.aspx

          Best Wishes,

          Julie Rubsam

Meet Tammy Foley, AWBO President Elect. Tammy is a Realtor for Coldwell Banker Shook. When it comes to real estate, few Realtors understand all the aspects of construction better than Tammy. She and her husband are the owners of a number of local business in Lafayette all related to the housing industry. It began in 1981 with Foley Masonry and then evolved in 1994 with custom home construction as Foley Homes. When their three sons graduated from Purdue they formed Foley Foundations and then further expanded their expertise into land development and rental income properties.

A wife, mom to three boys, and grandmother to four grand-daughters and four grandsons, life is full of excitement. Tammy says her greatest enjoyment is when the family gathers each month for dinner and then to cheer the grandchildren's success at baseball, soccer and football. They also enjoy using their business to sponsor youth sports teams and support youth for 'a better tomorrow'.

THIS MONTH'S PROGRAM: Building & Protecting Good Credit, Dan Ridenour

Do you stew over decisions such as:
          - Closing out Credit Cards accounts for your business?
          Consolidating your bills?
Consider purchases made with 90 days same as cash?
          Investigate re-financing old loans?
Pay Cash and not use Credit?

All these may sound like good "business savvy" ways to properly handle your money and finances. Think again. Are you aware of the effects that dropping your credit score even a few points can increase your insurance rates?

Dan Ridenour of CBF Institute, will be with us March 13th, educating us on business and even consumer credit. Dan has 28 years of credit experience and is the past president of NACM Great Lakes Region (National Association of Credit Management which has over 17,000 members).

Come take a respite from the daily grind and gain some valuable information you can put to good use!

          A Word from our President...

          Hello Everyone,

We had another great Business-Focused presentation last month. A big Thank You to our Program Committee who has brought in some great speakers this year!

I hope you joined us to hear Nikki Lewellen speak about the importance of being focused and specific when networking. Let's be honest, when networking for our business, it is often hard to know where to start and how to spend our time wisely. Nikki presented some great ideas on how to be focused in networking so we can create a word of mouth marketing machine. Are putting her work sheets to good use?

We are heading into the final month of the first quarter of 2012. We've had several strong AWBO presentations aimed at helping you get this year off to a strong start. I look forward to hearing what the Program Committee has in store for us and I hope you are too.

          A Word from our President...

Hello! If you joined us for our January meeting, you heard a great presentation by Stephen Murphy about dreaming for your business.  This month has just flown by but hopefully you have had some time to not only Dream for your business, but put some of those dreams down on paper with steps to achieving those dreams!

I want to share one of the things that Stephen said that really spoke to me.  He stated, “ Make sure the dream you have is YOUR dream, not someone else’s dream.”  Since I own a business with my husband, I often talk about and think about ‘Our Dream’.  But, when he said that, it occurred to me that I needed to take ownership of MY DREAM.  I finally understood that MY DREAM + HIS DREAM = OUR DREAM, and that for OUR DREAM to be achieved, I needed to fulfill my half of the equation.  It is so easy for our dreams to be deterred or become muddled with input and desires of others, stay true to YOUR DREAM and I know amazing things will happen for you!

          Dream Big and Be Amazing!

          A Word from our President...

This year's Holiday Auction was so much fun and very successful. I want to say, "Thank You" to Tammy Foley for putting together such a great event. I also want to thank all of you who joined us in raising money for such a great cause, The Cary Home for Girls.

As business owners, this is the time of year we reflect on the last year and ask ourselves, "Did I reach my goals?, What worked in my business and what didn't?" We are setting our goals, budgets, and plans for our business for the upcoming year. I am excited to say there are some great programs lined up to get our year off to a great start.

Wishing you all a great 2012!
          - Julie Rubsam

          About the Holiday Auction...

The Holiday Auction and Raffle was held at the MCL Cafeteria on December 13th, 2011. Once again, the business owners of our community and our very own AWBO ladies contributed with wonderful generosity and support! The gifts for the auction were amazing - from Jewelry, Birthday Party Certificates, Flower Arrangements and Dinner Gift Certificates, just to name a few. Attendance this year brought many guests that were welcomed to share our festivities. It is my pleasure pleasure to share the news that approximately $2,500 was raised for Cary Home for Girls! I wish to thank Julie Rubsam, Susan Benedict, Chris Myers and Melany Ramsey for your dedication in helping me with the event and being my "Go To People! HATS OFF to all of the AWBO ladies for supporting our event - donating, bringing guests and spending your money! The love I have for AWBO have been validated with great women who give from the heart wanting nothing in return. Hope your holiday was safe and full of fun and laughter!

          - Tammy Foley, Auction Chair and President Elect
