    Need a Staff or Intern?

Find out what CCO has to offer

This year we have learned about “generational differences” and how to “connect the dots” within the workplace. Now it is time to move forward with what we have learned and connect with one of the greatest resources available to us as local women business owners - Purdue University.

There are thousands of young, educated, eager to work individuals pouring into the workforce every year.  Student interns and newly graduated from Purdue University are ready to share their skills and experience in a professional environment. Why toss a ‘help wanted’ out into the ether when you can target your search to a specific group of qualified individuals? Their fresh perspective and understanding of technology may speak directly to a need you may have.

Susan Hychka, Associate Director of the Center for Career Opportunities (CCO), Purdue University, will share with AWBO members the many ways in which the CCO can assist employers with their recruitment and hiring needs. Who knows…this link may be where your next best intern or staff person is found.

    Invite a Friend

Thank you for your dedication in AWBO. Our Programs Committee has exciting speakers each month to make you/your business more successful.  Your membership in AWBO is important, as our organization works on the mission to Empower Women Business Owners for today and tomorrow.  Your outreach, to invite other Women Business Owners to visit our membership meeting, is vital in the growth of our organization.  Please feel free to invite guests to join us at MCL Cafeteria the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Winter has brought many challenges this past month to our businesses, family and friends.  Take advantage of the down time to follow up on leads, update your contact list and update your business plan for 2014.  Organization and procedures today will make you more productive in the busy months to come.

    Best wishes,

    Board Member Spotlight
    Amanda Snider

Amanda Snider is AWBO’s Co-Vice President of Membership, this year. She is a NASM certified personal trainer and the owner of Metamorphic Fitness. Amanda is originally from the small town of Three Oaks, Michigan and came to the Lafayette area to attend Purdue University. She
graduated in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and completed her master’s degree in 2006 in Health and Kinesiology, specializing in Sport and Exercise Psychology. She started Metamorphic Fitness, an all-women’s personal training studio, in 2009.

Below are some common questions that Amanda has been asked regarding her fitness business:

Q: What makes Metamorphic Fitness different from other gyms/ fitness centers?

A: Metamorphic is an all-women’s facility with female certified personal trainers only. It is an inviting place where women need not feel self-conscious as they might at a large fitness facility.
Metamorphic is about more than just working out though. I want every woman who comes in to be able to translate what she has learned into a lifestyle change where her whole family can benefit.

Q: Where are all the fitness machines?

A: I don’t need them! When I was working in a crowded gym, I would take my client over to a small corner with nothing but a pair of dumbbells and give her an amazing workout. This is where I first discovered the benefits of functional and bodyweight training. All of my training focuses on engaging the core in order to perform the movement, which produces good results because you are always working the core. It is also inexpensive, and I can teach my client a workout she can do anywhere.

Q: Who is your typical client?

A: Women who want more accountability and do not want the typical gym environment. I offer two types of services: personal training and small group training. My small group training is
increasingly popular with the 20s to early 30s age group, while my personal training is more popular with women in their 50s and older.

Q: What do you love about being a personal trainer?

A: I typically meet my clients when they have reached one of the lowest points in their lives.  Sometimes my services are a last resort for these women after they have tried everything else
without success. They are often unhappy with their weight, insecure, and ready for change. I love when I can help empower this woman to feel strong and confident through the physical and
mental transformation of a healthy lifestyle. I can almost see her light up from the inside when she realizes that anything is possible.

If you would like to know more about Metamorphic Fitness, please visit metamorphicfitness.com or contact Amanda Snider at

    Generational Differences

Do you find it hard to work with younger employees? Do you get tired of the old guys telling what you “should” be doing? How do you handle the generations in the work place? To find out the answers to these questions and more, come hear our January guest speaker, Robby Slaughter, as he enlightens us on this topic.  Lunch on your own starts at 11:30am with the meeting starting at 12pm to give our guest plenty of time to share his insights and answer our questions.

productivity expert. He is a nationally known speaker on topics related to personal productivity, corporate efficiency and employee engagement. Robby is the founder of AccelaWork, a company which provides speakers and consultants to a wide variety of organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, regional non-profits, small businesses and individual entrepreneurs.

    From the President...
    My Fellow Board Members,

It is with a heavy, heavy heart and many tears that I need to resign as President.  The events of November 17th's tornado taking my home and office have pushed we well past overload.

I had such a pile of dreams this year that I need to shelve, at least for now.  Can't thank you enough for being there for me personally and professionally even before the storm, let alone how you stepped up to the plate immediately after the storm!  Words will never be able to describe my gratitude.

AWBO needs a leader who is there mentally and physically and I just can't be that right now. Thank you for understanding.

Thanks to each and everyone of you for stepping up to the plate in the name of AWBO.

Thank you to all who were a part of the 2013 AWBO Holiday Auction and Drawing.  Through your hard work, donations, ticket purchases and bidding, we were able to raise more than $2600 for the Cary Home.  This donation will go a long way to help purchase supplies, clothing and other needs for the kids that the Cary Home helps.  Thank you for making this event such a great success.

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, December 10th at Noon:
    AWBO Holiday
    Auction & Drawing

The Holiday Auction and Drawing is coming up fast!!  It's the holiday season and that means time for the annual AWBO Holiday Auction and Drawing.  Please join us on Tuesday December 10th from 11:30 to 1:00 at the MCL Restaurant and Bakery in West Lafayette.  Invite your friends, family, employees and clients to celebrate the holiday season.  All proceeds from the Holiday Auction and Drawing benefit the Cary Home.

Also if you still want to donate or help with the event please contact Jenna Isch at jisch@farmersagent.com

    From the President...
It's almost time for AWBO's annual benefit auction for Cary Girls Home located on 18th Street in Lafayette.  Our president, Susan Benedict, asked me to tell you a little bit about it.  Our goal, through this auction, is to present the home with a nice amount that will supply the needs of the young girls who might find themselves uprooted from their homes very abruptly.  There are currently 3 girls there but that number can change daily.

The workers love to have people go in and work with the girls making crafts (which I love to do) and other skills to encourage them.  I know the money that will be raised, will go for paper, markers, paint, glue and other art/crafting supplies.  But many times the home runs low, or completely out on vital items such as clothes, winter coats, shoes, toiletries and backpacks.  Let's set them up with what they need, and some want's, for the girls at Cary Girls Home!!

Please mark it on your calendar, bring a purse full of money or your checkbook and don't miss this action packed event full of exciting things.

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, November 12th at Noon:
      Moneyball Panel

AWBO's book review panels have always been wonderful, yet challenging. Join us for an engaging conversation as we 'switch it up' and change from book to movie.

Sports metaphors are often used in a business setting to emphasize a point.  For example, “Go for the gold”, “keep your eye on the ball” and  “knock it out of the park” are references we identify with striving for a successful outcome.

What if the business scenario is less than desirable? What if your business needs to make a “game change” or “put in another player”?  Do you “come out swinging” or prefer to “sit on the bench”?  We will discuss these questions and deeper business related points highlighted in the movie Moneyball for AWBO Programs on November 12th.

We hope to hit a 'grand slam' with November programming. There is 1 MAJOR message to pick up on.  Let’s see who will “take the ball and run with it”.

      From the President...

I am thankful for women who are warriors-women who have paved the way for us to put the female demographic on a more level playing field.  Women who suffered personal pain to allow us to  live in a free country, women who have lowered the glass ceiling.

Think about those women, brave enough to blindly follow their husbands to cross the ocean on a ship-there was no questioning the decision back then- it's what you did: you followed your husband.  There was no guarantee the ship would even make it to the new world!  The movie "Abraham Lincoln" quickly points out how absurd the idea was to men that Women and Blacks should ever to able to vote.

Fast forward 200 years later.  The Suffragettes made it possible for us to be able to vote.  These women put their health, mental well-being and character on the line within society.  I think of Rosa Parks who bravely stood her ground by not relinquishing her bus seat, knowing a trip to the jailhouse was eminent.

When I started my career in the 8O's, talk of breaking the glass ceiling was all you heard about.  I'm thankful for those women who have selfishly became trailblazers to allow our paychecks to be more equal to men for the same level of work.  We still have a lot of work to do.

My thoughts turn to Mary Kay Ash founder of Mary Kay  Cosmetics was the first woman to own a Fortune 500 company.  I see Mary Kay as a burning example of women who knew how to get things done without making a person feel inferior.  One of her motto's was "always sandwich criticism in between two big slabs of love."

I'm thankful for the women who, 31 plus years ago felt it was vital that women business owners have a respite from doing day to day business.  Have you looked within our group of women trail blazers who could mentor you through this current or future rough patch?

For us older members - when is the last time you fought with technology?  Was it five minutes ago?  Have you considered partnering up with a younger member - I bet they can answer your question in 2 seconds!   We all have skills and lessons within this group that we never tap.  I'm thankful for women who put my heart at rest because of who you have become, someone I can lean on. What goldmine have you left untapped within AWBO?

      Susan Benedict
      AWBO President
      Empowering Women in Business

              Board Member Spotlight
                     Susan Benedict

Susan Benedict is AWBO's newest president and is the owner of Design Alternatives. Her company celebrated a 19 year anniversary in September and she has been in the Kitchen and Bath Industry nearly 30 years. That's a lot of industry experience. But what does that mean for you?
Susan helps clients maintain sanity within their living space especially when they can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

*Susan was told by a new client recently that she was called in because she is known for "getting the most out of every inch of space".
*She is more than a kitchen and bath designer: laundry rooms, home offices, closets, commercial restaurants. If it involves space planning, she has done it. Her ultimate goal is not to sell products. Susan wants her customer's to have a good working functional floor plan that meets their needs before they ever start shopping for products. Many customers confuse they likes or tastes for what actual function they need. Form follows function still applies.

She often plays "marriage counselor" by listening to both parties before producing a compromise.

*More and more of her customer's are hiring her to have the hard conversations with tradesmen and contractor's when there is a dispute. "Being a middle child stereotypes me as a mediator, but I guess it holds true here as well. Sometimes it just takes a third party to have an objective viewpoint when a project has stalled. Someone who understands both sides-Dreams vs. the Reality".

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, October 8th at Noon:
        Women's Health

When "women's healthcare" is the topic of conversation, our minds pull in many different directions. We think of the trials experienced by our mothers, our daughters and our close friends. Our own fears of heart disease, breast cancer and other female related disease surface when we make our annual visits and wait for the results. Dr. Knutson will provide essential health and wellness information on a variety of women's health issues. Bring a close friend or loved one to this important discussion that affects us all.

Dr. Renee Knutson, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., Premier Healthcare for Women, will be speaking to us on Tuesday, October 8th about 'Women's Health' issues.

        From the President...

Do you take time to dream? Is there a special place in your home or office that allows you to download and de-stress from the worries of your day?

If not, I encourage you to allow yourself 5 minutes a week to schedule time into your calendar to engage the right side of your brain... 5 minutes to take time for you.

As we start another year in AWBO this month I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to engage within this unique organization.  Do you find AWBO holds value for you as an organization?  How about personally?  Do you come for the networking, the education or just as a respite from doing the day to day business?

Someone within your organization has to be able to see 5 years into the future.  Who is the dreamer-the visionary?  I have a hunch it's you.  Who within AWBO can help you make that dream a reality rather than something you just think about on a periodic basis?

The Journal and Courier newspaper called a couple weeks ago and asked me some questions about "Man Caves".  I was able to refer them to 5 male friends I know who go there to de-stress.  This got me thinking-why don't we women have a designated room or area with a societal label? I'm dreaming that AWBO comes up with a new title for where we women go to "de-stress and  dream".

If you were unable to attend AWBO's first workshop last month you missed some valuable insights into getting started--often the biggest hurdle. Seek out a member who did attend and ask them what stood out to them the most. If you were an attendee- what have you done with what you learned? Is the workbook already on the shelf collecting dust or is your plan already in action?

My dream is that AWBO becomes such a recognized entity for empowering women within our community starts that it's members become the "go-see AWBO" organization when you want to get something done.

You know the saying- You want something done-ask a busy person!".

        Special Event Thank You...
Hi to all our AWBO readers!  I just want you to know that if you attended the Dream it! Plan it! Live it! event, we were delighted you were there.  And if you didn't attend, you really missed it. We had a room full of attenders (even a couple of gentlemen). I learned so much about myself and having dreams (I mix this with my goals) and how to see them through.  I actually wrote them down and verbalized them for the first time.  It made me think and realize that I CAN "LIVE IT!"
Our board wants you to know that there will be more great speakers in the future so be sure to get involved in our monthly meetings the second Tuesday of every month at MCL Cafeteria in West Lafayette, where there is always a wonderful variety of delicious food choices.
Hope to see you Tuesday, October 8 at 11:30 for lunch  with the meeting at 12 noon

            From the President...

What an opportunity to be President during the 30th Anniversary of AWBO! You have all touched my heart and words alone cannot express enough my appreciation. AWBO has been busy: supporting Cary Home for Girls, the Holiday Auction and Raffle, Food Finders Mobile Food Pantry,
Chamber of Commerce Expo, the Summer Social, and upcoming Work Shop, "Dream It! Plan It! Live it!"

These events could not have happened without the love and dedication of our AWBO Board of Directors, Corporate Sponsorships and the Support and Vision of our Membership. To each of you, THANK YOU for making this year a success, for your support and mostly your friendship! It has been a
pleasure to serve as president along side the talented and gifted women of AWBO.

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, August 13 at Noon:
                Mastering Your Memory

Did you know that your memory can directly impact your business’ bottom-line? We’ve come to rely on our gadgets while we ponder the disastrous consequence should we ever lose our iPhone.

Join us on Tuesday, August 13th for “Mastering Your Memory”. Phil Marino will teach you valuable skills that will improve your ability to recall information, which will ultimately benefit you professionally and personally.   You will gain an appreciation for a “trained memory” as it may lend to “increased sales, develop more confidence, and give a competitive advantage”… among other benefits.  This is a fun and interactive presentation that you will not want to miss.

                From the President...

This past few years I have been blessed working alongside great women of AWBO. My life is richer, filled with lasting friendship and so much inspiration from wonderful Women Business Owners who embraces life and business. The AWBO Board is filled with leadership, camaraderie and dedication to AWBO. Do you enjoy working with women as a team? Enjoy outreach? If you answered YES, you would be a great contribution to the new Board of Directors. For more information, call me Tammy Foley 765-479-1216 or President Elect Holly Thomas.

Next meeting topic for Tuesday, July 9 at Noon:
                    Healthcare:
What do employers have to do next?

With the landscape of employer-provided health care potentially changing over the next few years, employers should consider their future plans related to their role in employee health care. Employers may have to make some big decisions about whether to continue providing coverage to their employees. The “pay or play” penalties provide some incentive for employers to continue coverage, since they will be at risk for significant penalties if they do not. However, employers may decide that paying the penalty is more cost-effective than continuing to pay the ever-increasing costs of health care for employees and their families.

On the other hand, uncertainty among employees about the quality and cost of individual health coverage continues to make employer-provided health coverage an attractive recruiting and retention tool.

                    Healthcare Reform is here.
How does it fit into your business plan?
Join us Tuesday, July 9th for lunch, a short business meeting and a program packed full of the tools you may need in the near future to assess how healthcare reform will be impacting your business on many levels.

Mindy Anderson-Wallis of Employee Benefit Solutions will breakdown the highlights and provide valuable insight into the key components that need to be scrutinized once the ground rules are established. You can't afford to miss this one!

                    From the President...

A big SHOUT OUT of THANKS to Holly Thomas for coordinating a very enjoyable Summer Social last month. It was a HOOT to find that creativity we lost from our school days and the friendships we made while giggling at our own creations. Thank you Tamara Coxand your KidzArt educators for the inspiration, fun and encouragement.
                    We had a great time!

As the 4th of July approaches may you enjoy your family, friendship and be safe in your travels.

                    Sponsor our Goal Setting Workshop

On Tuesday, September 12 we're hosting perhaps one of the most important special events we've ever coordinated
                     - a Dreams and Goals planning workshop. We've invited a very special guest and published author from Wisconsin, Traci Bogan, (www.tracibogan.com) to lead us in a 3-hour workshop on living a more meaningful life.
In order to make this workshop possible, we need SPONSORS.  This could be an amazing opportunity to associate your brand with the most inspiring evening these women may experience all year...particularly if your brand is related to some of the many common dreams & goals women have - like better health, weight loss, business growth, added income, travel, renewed relationships, etc. That's because these women will be staking a claim on their goals that very evening!

If you'd like to become a sponsor at a $125 or $500 level, please contact Program VPs Susan Benedict (426-4375) or Danielle Gaylord (427-2785)Sponsorships are due Friday, July 5th.

                        From the President...

WOW, did you have a moment last month with Cory Vanderburgof Huntington Bank when he spoke about how to put yourself/business into a better position when working with borrowed money? What an a-ha moment which affects us personally along with risk to our business. Thank you Cory for making us aware of how credit card debit can be damaging to our business.

It's also a sad time as we mourn the unexpected loss of Brenda Combs, owner of Moondance Marketing (see below). It's a reminder to us all that life is precious and we must be sure we're living a complete and full life beyond work and business.

That's why our AWBO Board is passionate about creating and building relationships as women in the business community. I hope you'll take the time to join us at the Summer Social this month. Bring a guest, socialize, find that creativity spark and enjoy the night.

I look forward to seeing you there,

                        Tammy Foley

                        Board Member Profile: Tamara Cox
Meet Tamara Cox - AWBO programs chair for scheduling 3-minute spotlights. Tamara owns KidzArt of West Central Indiana which is a local art franchise committed to increasing self-confidence and problem-solving skills for “kids” of all ages (including adults). She has 2 sons that were involved in KidzArt classes at their local elementary school and she saw them become more & more confident in themselves because they were learning a new skill. When the previous owner moved out of state, Tamara saw an opportunity to bring this program to many more students and families so she purchased the business in January 2009. Tamara graduated from Purdue with a Management and Finance Degree in 1991 before moving from Indianapolis to Benton County in 1997 to marry and raise a family. Her two sons are ages 13 & 11 and her oldest son, Mitchell, just won the “Artist of the Year” award at his school. Tamara is the Treasurer at her local church, is on the Benton County Relay for Life Committee, is Past President of the school PTO, and enjoys time outside with her family. Tamara's KidzArt business will be teaching at our AWBO summer social in June!
