How to Have a Peaceful Holiday Season while Maintaining Your Personal & Professional Lives

Dr. Barbara Osborn, LCSW, is a Clinical Social Worker Specialist at the Alpine Clinic in Lafayette, Indiana. She attended and graduated with honors from graduate school in 1985, having over 29 years of diverse experiences. She will speak about the stress and anxiety that can come with the holidays, and suggest ways to keep a peaceful presence about yourself during these times. Let's make it a season to enjoy!

    --------------------------------------------

    A Note from Your President...

I have renewed energy.  It comes from taking stock of the harvest. Processing where we have been and where we’re headed was the topic of our “Programs Committee" brainstorming session.  Have you noticed the leaves starting to change color? Now is the time when all the local farmers are anxious to assess whether their crops will give them any ROI? Have you taken stock of your company's  harvest as we head into the last quarter? When was the last time you dusted off those New Year’s Business Goals for 2015?

As you process this production, please consider whether your investment in AWBO has paid off for 2015?  Did you take the time or expend the energy necessary to gain networking connections? Does AWBO provide a respite from the everyday grind of doing business-attending a meeting is a prerequisite! Do you view your organization as a new source of business contacts?  If so, do you make it a point to introduce yourself to the visitors at the meetings each month?  Have you spent any time getting to know a fellow AWBO member outside of a general membership meeting?

Now back to that investment.  When is the last time you invited a woman business owner to a membership meeting?  When is the last time you shared the value of your investment with a fellow business owner? Sharing the opportunity now, as we start our calendar year will allow your friend to gain a whole year’s worth of the value of AWBO.  Would you be willing to volunteer for a limited time sub-committee to further the awareness of our organization? We all know you get out of an organization what you put in. Are you in?

    Best regards,
    Susan Benedict

    --------------------------------------------
    A Note from Your President...

Wow-finally someone understands what I am going through as a business owner!  How can anyone be expected to knock down a huge list of goals (WIG) in the midst of doing the day-to-day business (the whirlwind)? Especially when the day-to-day business always screams the loudest?

Simply put, "you don’t".  What relief I felt after reading “The Four Disciplines of Execution”.  Isabel Hogue did a wonderful job of walking us through the execution of this book for our August book review. More importantly, she was able to hit the highlights and explained for us how each of the 4 disciplines should be examined within our businesses to achieve the execution.

As a business owner, do you struggle with creating your strategy or engaging the execution of that strategy?  As Covey points out in his video and book, even executives with MBA’s struggle far more with execution than what they were taught in school-creating the strategy.

Kudos and thank you Isabel!  Then to drive the point home, Isabel tagged up with Shirley Pence from Stanley Steemer to explain how these four principles had impacted her business. Shirley shared with us they now have a regularly scheduled staff meeting on a weekly basis and she never misses it.  They don’t talk about the whirlwind (day-to-day business) they focus on the single most important goal for the company and they hold each other accountable. This builds comradery and a support system.  Shirley says you will even hear her team egging each other on-encouraging one another, not just themselves!

The single most surprising comment I heard at this meeting was something I never expected to hear.  Shirley says the “4 Disciplines of Execution” has changed the culture within her company.  Think about that for a minute.

What was the last thing you implemented within your company that affected the “culture” for the better?  If you haven’t read a good business book lately, grab a copy at Amazon.com, or better yet head to http://www.franklincovey.com/4dflv/4D_bottomvid.html where you can watch a 17 minute video, or you can listen to a 3-part discussion at http://leadershipbookclub.com/disciplines-1/.

    --------------------------------------------

Are you selling your home or know of someone who is?
Fall is the time to start strategizing - don't wait until the Spring, when you plan to list!  Here are some helpful tips:

    1. First, meet with your realtor(c) to determine the timeline of events, what improvements to be made (if any), how best to stage your home, and what price range to expect.
    2. Speaking of staging-what is it? Staging simply means arranging your furniture to best showcase the floor plan and maximize the use of space.
    3. During the fall & winter months, give away, donate or sell items you no longer need - maximize your space by leaving at least 1/3 empty.
    4. Brighten dark rooms and hallways with a fresh coat of paint, and make sure there is adequate lighting throughout.
    5. Keep personal mementos to a minimum: Buyers want to imagine themselves living there, and cannot do that if all they see is the Seller.
    6. Not everyone is a cat or dog lover, and may not appreciate seeing food bowls, smelling litter boxes, or leaving with tufts of pet hair. Find places to tuck them easily out of sight for showings and vacuum on a regular basis.
    7. When it is time to list, make sure you can easily show the house without requiring more than 2 hours advance notice...the easier it is to show, the easier it will be for a realtor(c) to bring Buyers!

As an agent at Coldwell Banker Shook, I have experience with both Buyers and Sellers. I am also a Senior Real Estate Specialist, meaning I have additional training regarding the specific needs of the senior population, where buying and selling is likely to be quite different from years past. If you have any questions, call me (765.414.1517) - I would love to work with you!

The 4 Disciplines of Execution Achieving Your Wildly Important Goals
by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey and Jim Huling

Join us as we discuss the book, The 4 Disciplines of Execution.  Do you remember the last major initiative you watched die in your organization.  Did it go down with a loud crash?  Or was it slowly and quietly suffocated by other competing priorities?  By the time it finally disappeared, it's likely no one even noticed.  What happened?  The "whirlwind" of urgent activity required to keep things running day-to-day devoured all the time and energy you needed to invest in executing your strategy for tomorrow! The 4 Disciplines of Execution can change all of that forever.

The 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX) is a simple, repeatable, and proven formula for executing on your most important strategic priorities in the midst of the whirlwind.  By following the 4 Disciplines –– focusing on the wildly important, acting on lead measures, keeping a compelling scoreboard, and creating a cadence of accountability –– leaders can produce breakthrough results.

4DX is not theory. It is a proven set of practices that have been tested and refined by hundreds of organizations and thousands of teams over many years.  When a company or an individual adheres to these disciplines, they achieve superb results –– regardless of the goal. 4DX represents a new way of thinking and working that is essential to thriving in today's competitive climate.

If you haven’t had time to read the book, here’s a link to a 17 minute summary:
    http://www.franklincovey.com/4dflv/4D_bottomvid.html

See you for lunch and networking from 11:30am to 12pm with meeting from 12pm to 1pm.

    A Note from Your President...

    Dear AWBO Members,

It is with a sad heart that I inform you that I respectfully submitted my resignation from AWBO.

I have made the decision to close my business, thus, no longer qualifying me for membership. Please be assured nothing bad happened, it's a matter of being at a point in my business where a lot needed to be invested vs it's best to close on a high note. I chose the high note.

I am blessed to say from the time I joined AWBO and over the last 4 ½ years, I have made wonderful friendships, learned a lot about business and thoroughly enjoyed being educated by both our speakers and our members!

Words can not express how awesome a group AWBO is and I will miss seeing all of you on a monthly basis. I will be unable to attend this month’s meeting, but wiil be there in September to thank all of you for your support this year.

I am happy to say that President Elect Susan Benedict has graciously accepted to step in the role of President two months early. Thank you Susan!

I would also like to thank all my board members Susan Benedict, Linda Berryman, Amanda Snider, Shirley Pence, Melony Ramsey, Ashley Bigelow and Rhonda Feurer for making my job as President so easy.

Again I thank you and wish all of you many blessings!

PUTTING OUT FIREWORKS IN YOUR WORKPLACE

This month Kitty Haffner from Total Solutions will be our guest speaker.  Total Solutions works with individuals and companies committed to achieving higher levels of performance and retention through the use of assessments – hiring/Job Fit assessments, honesty and integrity assessments, 360 Leadership Evaluations, Customer Service and Sales assessments. These assessment tools are used for pre-employment, succession planning, and team building --  identifying the most successful and productive work environments for employees as we focus on one’s own strengths, abilities and motivation.

Kitty Haffner graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a B.A. degree in Psychology with a minor in Business Administration.  Her work background includes working in customer service with two manufacturing

companies, a paralegal for a law firm for more than 10 years, and 20 years as a consultant and facilitator with her husband, Herm.  Total Solutions is a consulting firm, helping large and small companies in the areas of business and strategic planning, sales and customer service training, executive coaching and various assessment tools to help clients reach their greatest potential.

    3-minute speaker:

    Danielle Greenback Mary Kay

    --------------------------------------------
    A Note from Your President...

    Here Come the Fireworks!

When I was a little girl, I was terrified of thunder and lightning. I literally would grab on to whoever was closest to me and keep my eyes closed and let them lead me around. I hated when the family would open the curtains to the big window in the living room to watch the lightning. Again, eyes closed, ears covered. Why must they put me through this? Then on the 4th of July, we’d go see the fireworks! I was a tortured sole but I did overcome my fear and actually enjoy storms (to a point).

This confession to you made me think about our workplace fireworks. When you’re new in business or even starting your working career, you have no clue what the fireworks are in business. Some companies may have a few, some a lot with the loud ones and some are duds.

So what are some causes of these fireworks? The biggest one is staff. When we hire someone in our business, they are now an extension of us. They may have passed the interview with flying colors, passed the background check and even sent you a sweet thank you note. You hire them and now the other staff is complaining when things have been going so well, you have someone stealing as the numbers just are not adding up or maybe you’re being publically talked about on social media. How do we pick the right person for the right job and not lose money?

I am happy to welcome Kitty Haffner of Total Solutions as our guest speaker for July. Kitty is going to help us figure out what to do so there are no or very minimal fireworks in your workplace.

I wish you all a very Happy and Safe 4th of July!

Thank You For a Great Summer Social
Thank you to all who attended AWBO's Summer Social. The event was a huge success thanks to all of you! The event allowed us to take a little time out of our busy schedules to have some fun and to connect with fellow business women. We couldn't have asked for a better evening or a more gorgeous venue to enjoy our gourmet dinner.  Thank you again to President Elect, Susan Benedict of Design Alternatives for opening her home and to Chef Ben and Lee Supply of Carmel, IN for preparing the meal.  We hope everyone who attended made some great connections and picked out an awesome business book.

    A Note from Your President...

I love to meet new people.  Meeting people at a business meeting is a lot different than at a networking event.  The usual meeting is arranged seating, down to business, numbers, deals, etc.  We've all been there, we all do it.  It's ok, not a ton of fun, but ok.

Now, switching that meeting to a networking event...what an opportunity!  It's an opportunity to meet someone new, to catch up with old friends, to talk with business associates in a non-threatening way.  Not to say we're not professional, but the atmosphere is low key.

With that being said, I personally invite each and every one of you to join us on Tuesday, June 9th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm for AWBO's Summer Social.  I am excited to see the different books that will be brought for exchanging, to try food from a private chef and visiting.

So grab a book that you've enjoyed and would like to pass along, bring a friend or two, but most of all, have a great time!!

    A Note from Your President...
I know we have all had this thought, "How am I going to get through this?".  What motivate us to get through these problems?  All you need to do is fill in the blank of what your problem may be.  Is it financial, employee problems, communication mix ups, kids, health?  You name it, we've all been there.

So I thought, I'm going to look up some really awesome motivational quotes and say something profound to motivate us.  There are some great quotes out there, but none of them quite hit what  I was looking for.  Most of them were about hard work, being good, working as a team...all great but still not it.  I then found it. "With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts." -Eleanor Roosevelt

Bingo!  It's our inner strength and thoughts that motivate us the most!  I am blessed to be a part of such a great group of strong women.  It takes a lot of new thoughts and strength to be a business owner with things ever evolving and growing.  It makes it better to know that we are not alone in our journey's..

So in ending, grow and bloom like the awesome women that you are.

    TAKING LEADERSHIP
Kris Taylor’s passion for developing leaders is evident in her coaching, speaking, teaching, writing and consulting work. Her 30 years work experience are rich in variety – from Fortune 200 (15 years) to non-profit (10 years) to her current success in leading K. Taylor & Associates for the past 7 years. Over that time, Kris has been blessed to work in a multitude of roles, including organizational change and development, leadership, learning, and human resources, and operations. There has been one consistent outcome, no matter the role: her ability to promote, lead and implement positive change.

Her most recent endeavor, Evergreen Leadership, is the culmination of her personal experiences and thorough leadership in transformational change. It is based on her strong belief that the world is in desperate need of leaders at all levels who are effective in times of uncertainty and unrelenting change. A Note from Your President...
It’s Spring! It hasn't quite felt that way, but the signs are there.  I've heard the birds chirping a bit more.  My tulips are starting to sprout.  I've even been able to open the doors a couple times to let the sunshine in.

Spring is always a great time for cleaning. What are you cleaning?  Are you getting the winter’s dirt off your windows?  How about going through the closets and donating those things you haven’t used or worn in over a year or three or ten?  We all have it....the “I’ll get to it later” syndrome.

Are you “Spring Cleaning” your business too?  Do you have that proverbial stack of business cards on your desk? Have you made contact with that person in a year or less?
Why not? I’ll get to it later?  We all do it.  So think, why do I have that card? Did I ask them to give it to me or were they just handing out their cards? If I ask for it, I write a note on the back of it with the date, event and a couple of memory pushers. I try (note the "try"...no one’s perfect) to get a note of thanks for meeting, networking, etc., and start to
    build that relationship.

My point?  We all start out in our businesses like newly planted seeds needing to be nurtured. As we grow and blossom, there will be elements that we need to storm and
persevere through.  Are you weeding out the elements that are building up in your businesses or are you nurturing to grow and blossom your business?  Take leadership of your business!  Keep on track, ask for help, ask for opinions, educate and be learning always.  AWBO has many years of experience within our membership, are you taking advantage of that knowledge?

Happy Spring and Happy Easter to all!

    Best Regards,
    Jan French

INTERTWINING SMALL BUSINESS SUPPORT & COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Resa Hodnett of the Lafayette–West Lafayette Chamber of Commerce (GLC) will be one of our guest panelists at this month's AWBO meeting. GLC has stood as the united voice for business in the Greater Lafayette community since 1927. In that time, the commercial prosperity and quality of life on both sides of the Wabash River have continually improved because of the dedication and hard work of hundreds of volunteers and Chamber members who share a belief . . . . . . a belief that a community is only as strong as the alliance it maintains between its business leaders, local government officials and the people who enjoy living and working here.

Susan B. Davis of Indiana Small Business Development as well as the Regional Director of the Hoosier Heartland ISBDC, will be one of our guest panelists at this month's AWBO meeting. Having held this position since 1991, the program provides counseling and assistance for existing and start-up businesses. It also provides training programs for the small business community and a referral resource network consisting of area professionals to assist businesses. Susan coordinated the Greater Lafayette Venture Club for Greater Lafayette Commerce. Susan also served as the Vice President of Greater Lafayette Progress, Inc., in promoting workforce development and support for existing business and industry. She has owned and operated two businesses.

    A Note from Your President...
“In like a lion, out like a lamb.” That’s what March always says to me.  We know there’s going to be those last few snow storms before we even see the likes of spring.  That’s ok.  It makes us appreciate getting out without shoveling, scraping windows, heavy coats, etc.

What does getting ready for spring mean to you?  Is it getting the house cleaned?  Planning a trip?  Hiking?  How about thinking about your Community?  Lafayette is a great community to raise a family, to get a great education, to work, to grow!

So let’s take that a step up to what do you know about your Business Community?  Do you know we have one of the best Chamber of Commerce’s in the area?  They are active in supporting both big and small businesses that shape this community.  Do you know we have not only the Chamber of Commerce but also the Hoosier Heartland Indiana Small Business Development Center for us to utilize?  Join me next Tuesday, the 10th to learn
    more about both!

I look forward to growing my company this year and through my involvement in the Chamber, our Community and good old hard work, I plan to do just that! How about you?  What are your growth plans within your Community for 2015? Work growth, volunteer opportunities, networking opportunities?

So, to close this letter, I leave with these words that I live by, “You are Never too Old to Learn Something New”.

    Happy Spring!

    TAKING THE TIME TO LAUGH

AWBO is pleased to welcome Sally Coffman as our guest speaker.  Sara Jane "Sally" Coffman, SWF, asks the Big
Questions, like, "If we can put a man on the moon, why can't I find a comfortable bra?" and "Is my new boyfriend's ex-wife really going to kill me, or is she just bluffing?"

Sally can dish the dirt or fry it up on a pan, she can turn the simple purchase of a new writing chair into an entire room renovation, and she can tolerate almost any flaw in a man if he has tenure and benefits. Mostly, though, Sally can make you laugh.

Please join us on Tuesday, February 10th for a fun time!
    --------------------------------------------
    A Note from Your President...
It must be fun to be February.  You provide us a shortened month to work.  You provide us the celebration of Valentine’s Day.  You also have the fun of throwing in an extra day every 4 years and calling it Leap Year.  So with that being said, February’s AWBO theme will be FUN!

There are many things that we each consider fun.  My fun may not be what you would consider fun, but that’s what makes us each unique.  I have a friend who is a mountain
climber.  Very cool, but not for me.  I love hiking and the mountains, but climbing, that is certainly something I have no desire to do.  I like my feet on the ground.

One thing I do love to do is read.  I always say that reading a book is like a movie in your mind.  You imagine all the characters.  You get enthralled in the plot, you cry, you laugh, you try to figure out who did it.  With that being said, we are so happy to have Sara Jane Coffman as our guest speaker this month. She is going to discuss her book “There is No Such Thing as a Comfortable Bra”.  How fun is that?!

Ladies, remember to take time to laugh.  Take time to enjoy the fellowship of other women who understand that it’s not always easy being a business owner.  Take time for
you.  We are no good if we aren't taking care of ourselves. So share the fun, share your passions, but most of all, know that you are awesome!

    Respectfully,
    Jan French
    AWBO President
    Empowering Women in Business

PS: I am so sorry to be missing this fun meeting, but I will be on vacation with my husband and will also be visiting my Dad.  I’ll enjoy my fun, while you enjoy fun with Sara Jane!

The Pampered Chef gives me the ability to help hosts, guests and consultants get the right tools for an efficient even fun kitchen.  I help with time saving tips and preparations for meals with budget friendly recipes. Making life easier and fun in the kitchen is a priority.  It's such a great way to bring families & friends together.  This year will be my 23rd Anniversary.  I still love it and love helping others get free tools or even a commission check!

I started with AWBO back in 2001 and was an active member & past president. I left the group about four years ago because of children and availability.  Times have changed again and I am back.  I truly enjoy this group of hard working ladies that share their time and talents!  This
group offers a unique opportunity to grow personally, as well as professionally.  Hospitality/Greeter is my position. Since I love to talk & meet new people it is a great fit.

    MOTIVATION FOR 2015

AWBO is pleased to welcome Michele Luck of Unlimited Luck, LLC as our guest speaker. Michele Luck is an author, motivational coach, and speaker who brings her contagious enthusiasm to her workshops and events. With extensive training and experience in differentiated instruction and engagement, her inspiration motivates participants to reclaim their desire to learn and build upon their natural talents and strengths.

Please join us for lunch and networking from 11:30am until the meeting begins at 12pm. Meeting ends by 1pm

    --------------------------------------------
    A Note from Your President...
January, 2015. Can you believe it? Where did 2014 go? Did you reach the goals you set for 2014? Did your business grow, did you get new employees, did you have your ups and downs. etc? Now, on top of that, did you get your personal bills in order, get a new house or remodel, have a health change, send a child to college, say good-bye to a loved one, welcomed a new baby, etc? When you look back, it’s amazing what we go through in a year.

This past year I increased my social media, gave more responsibility to my assistant, made a couple of quoting mistakes (always learning) and became President of AWBO.  My husband and I celebrated our 33rd Anniversary. We went out east to celebrate my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday. I lost a couple family members and a couple friends.

How do we keep going? What motivates you to get up every morning? It’s different for all of us. No two of us are alike, so we need to find our personal motivation. I had
to make changes to my diet and to start exercising this past year, something that I did because I had to, not because I wanted to. But I must admit, I am feeling better than I have in years. I have energy and an appreciation for feeling good for the first time in 4 years. I like feeling good and having energy and I don’t want to lose that. That’s part
of my motivation! I also have goals for my business and with the help of my assistant Jordan, we have agreed to keep each other accountable. That’s motivation!

So where are you going with this you ask? Everyone has a story. Everyone has been motivated or will be motivated by something or someone in their lives. Maybe it has already happened to you. Maybe this is the year. Let us motivate each other to be the best we can be for 2015!

    Happy New Year!

    THANK YOU!!
Thank you to all who attended and donated to our Annual Holiday Auction and Raffle!  What a wonderful event full of networking, silent auctions gifts, raffle gifts and, with much generosity, donations for two great causes.

We were able to provide a $295 memorial to Dan Webb in honor of Joanne‘s Leadership and Friendship in AWBO.  If you would still like to submit a note for the book we will be sending to Dan, you may still do that via e-mail to Jan French or at our meeting next week.

We will report on the monetary donation to Cary Home for Girls after our monthly board meeting. The Cary Home Reps, Julie Pressler and Maddie Riordan, left with armfuls
of donated gifts for the girls. Cary Home is a great place to teach a skill like painting, writing, exercise, etc., just give them a call. Again we thank you for your caring for our
    community!
