Metamorphic Fitness

Amanda Snider is on AWBO’s board for communications this year. She is a NASM certified personal trainer and the owner of Metamorphic Fitness. She graduated from Purdue with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and completed her master’s degree in Health and Kinesiology specializing in Sport and Exercise Psychology. She started Metamorphic Fitness, an all-women’s personal training studio, in 2009.

Metamorphic is an all-women’s facility with female certified personal trainers. It is an inviting place where women need not feel self-conscious as they might at a large fitness facility. Our clients are women who want more accountability and do not want the typical gym environment. Metamorphic is about more than just working out though. I want every woman who comes in to be able to translate what she has learned into a lifestyle change where her whole family can benefit.

I focus on proper spinal alignment and engaging the core in order to move better and with less pain in daily life. We often don’t realize just how good we can feel by doing simple daily exercises that help us to move better and feel better. My style of training is accessible in that I can teach my client a workout she can do anywhere.

I typically meet my clients when they have reached one of the lowest points in their lives. Sometimes my services are a last resort for these women after they have tried everything else without success. They are often unhappy, in pain, and ready for change. I love when I can help empower this woman to feel strong and confident through the physical and mental transformation of a healthy lifestyle. I can almost see her light up from the inside when she realizes that anything is possible.

From the first AWBO meeting I attended, I immediately saw the value in being a member of this group. I do most of my work online from my home office, working with clients in other states by phone, email, and video conferencing. In many cases, I’m working with people I’ve never actually met face-to-face. It might be easy for me to retreat behind my computer screen and not engage with the local business community at all – but what a mistake that would be!

Even if you’re someone who sees your customers and staff members every day, business ownership can still be an isolating experience at times. The good news is, we don’t have to go it alone. AWBO provides an opportunity to make connections and form friendships with women who understand what it’s like to be the boss. There is a wealth of experience and knowledge within the membership, and I love how AWBO members encourage and support each other as we all grow and learn together.

Our guest speakers have provided valuable expertise in areas like law, finance, insurance, marketing, and more. Even when I think I’m already familiar with the topic, I have never left a meeting without learning something new. I usually also have a list of things I want to research further, and several business cards from new connections. I hope to see you at the next meeting!

A Note From Your President...

It was a warm summer day when the door opened at work. A man stepped inside with both hands raised in the air, asked, “May I come in? I promise I’ll put my hands in my pockets and I won’t touch anything.” As he placed both hands in his pockets, I replied, “Of course, you are welcome to come in.” That was the beginning of getting to know Jim. We later learned he had previously been in a serious life altering accident, which caused him, among other things, to communicate differently and sometimes with more difficulty.

Jim came in many times, even after we moved to our new location. We never knew what mood he would be in, so we learned to proceed cautiously when he entered the store. We wanted to avoid upsetting him.

One time he said, “Ma’am, I have a question.” I said, “Yes, sir?” He replied, “Don’t call me sir.” I said, “Well, you just called me ma’am, and I’m a woman so I called you ‘sir’ because you are a man, right?” He said, “You got me there” and our friendly conversation continued. Another time he came in and saluted us saying, “Permission to come aboard Captain?” He was saluted back and told, “Permission granted.”

Most of the time, Jim came to buy foreign coins because he saw value in them and bought them to give to his favorite people. One day after making his purchase, I heard him say, “Just keep the change. I don’t want it back.” Even though it wasn’t much, I told the employees to put the change in a bag each time and subtract it from his following purchase.

He passed away a few years ago and we miss him. When I went to the visitation I told his family how he had touched the lives of our entire staff.

This year something very special happened. While at school one day, our young grandson was telling a teacher about his new watch. Among the questions the teacher asked him was where he had purchased it. When he told her it was from our business, she began to cry and told him, those were the people who were so kind to her brother.

So, I believe that we, as business owners and women, should never forget to be kind and compassionate to everyone we meet. It might be a client, customer, teller, server, cashier, lawyer, preacher, nurse, doctor or police officer. We may never know what difficulty they may have experienced or what they may be facing. Bring sunshine into their day, and we can go home with a smile.

Eliminating Biases in Portrayals of Women Leaders & Entrepreneurs

Nathalie Duval-Couetil, MBA, PhD

Society is searching for ways to increase women’s involvement in leadership and entrepreneurship as a means to contribute to the growth of our economy. This involves developing programs designed to eliminate barriers and biases to make organizations and networks more inclusive. This presentation examines the role we all play in determining the best way to create “separate but equal” initiatives directed at women without reinforcing gender stereotypes while doing so.

Speaker Bio:

Nathalie Duval-Couetil is the Director of the Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Program, Associate Director of the Burton D. Morgan Center, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Technology Leadership and Innovation at Purdue University. She is responsible for the launch of the university’s multidisciplinary entrepreneurship program, which involves over 1800 students each year. For undergraduates, she has established courses and experiential initiatives focused on entrepreneurship fundamentals, venture development, professional development, and women and leadership. At the graduate level, she co-teaches a technology commercialization course called “Life of a Faculty Entrepreneur: Discovery, Development and Translation.”

Nathalie’s research focuses on entrepreneurship pedagogy and assessment; entrepreneurship education and STEM; student intellectual property policy; graduate student professional development; and women and leadership. This work has been funded through grants from the National Science Foundation, Burton D. Morgan Foundation, Kern Foundation and VentureWell. She has also worked on entrepreneurship capacity building projects with international partners.

Prior to academia, Nathalie worked in the field of market research and strategy consulting in Europe and the U.S. with Booz Allen and Hamilton and Data and Strategies Group. She received a BA from UMass Amherst, an MBA from Babson College, and MS and PhD degrees from Purdue University. She serves on the board of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) and has held leadership roles in other professional organizations.

In 1988, Ram-Z Exchange opened the doors on Elmwood Avenue. By 2007, we had outgrown that location so everything was moved, doubling the space. The name was changed to RamZs Emporium, “Where you’ll find things you didn’t know you needed but now you desperately want.”

New things arrive daily, some that you would never expect to see in Lafayette. At RamZs, you’ll find a large selection of jewelry, coins, antiques, collectibles, guitars, electronics and firearms. Some services we provide are repairing jewelry, custom designing jewelry, notary assistance and giving loans for anything from emergencies to vacations. Tip: If you are always honest and caring, your customers will return and tell others to visit also.

When we had our ribbon cutting ceremony and a month later, won the Small Business of the Month award, I realized that I was so out-of-the-loop! I didn’t know the people who attended either event. So when someone told me about an organization of women business owners, I visited a meeting. It was then that I realized how isolated I was, glued to the business and starving for a connection with other women in business. I quickly joined the Association of Business Women Owners (AWBO), and have been on the board since then.

I put AWBO in my schedule, make it a priority, and try not to miss a single meeting. Each one brings new information that I can use in everyday situations. If you haven’t been to AWBO, visit soon. I hope you will want to be a part of the only local organization meeting the needs of business owners.

In April, 2016, Ron and I rounded the last corner and made our way to the exit of the Business Expo. And there it was … the booth for the Association of Women Business Owners. Although many exhibitors were gone or had their packing boxes stacked and ready, there was Melony Ramsey and team: still talking with people and handing out info. Says a lot, doesn’t it?

Within 24 hours, I was an AWBO member.

Like many of you, I was a bit leery of AWBO at first. I’d been involved with several “women’s business groups” that weren’t about business. I was greatly encouraged when I discovered AWBO’s speaker roster is first-rate, our meetings are worth my time because I learn something each month, and the members are dedicated to the cause of furthering their own companies … and mine.

The relationship-building I find with AWBO is exactly what my business and budget need.

A note to the AWBO Board of Directors: I love your new idea of the business card “hat,” randomly matching us with another person to set up a one-to-one outside the main meeting. Priceless! Great ice breaker. Thanks for all your time on our behalf.

A Note From Your President...

AWBO’s Summer Social was a wonderful event, thanks to Deb Plue, President Elect. Held at Moses Fowler House Mansion, our tour guide, Barbara Huddleston, gave the most detailed and fascinating story about the mansions history. You’ll want to go there sometime if you haven’t been there yet. Sovereign Caterers had a delicious array of delicate appetizers, also presented by Barbara Huddleston.

Deb talked about writing your story. This subject fascinated me because we have the most unusual things that arrive at our store and strange things that occur. When we moved from our former location, employees documented the things they never wanted to forget. It made me wish we had kept track of much more than those three pages of memories. When I hear about the books others have written, writing our own story pops into my mind again.

Have you ever thought about writing “your” story? Whether you just started your business or have been open for many years, why not record things and make a book of them. Preserve your memories in your business and your life.

Crafting Your Message with Public Radio

I have been in the Greater Lafayette area for 20 years, staying in the area after attending Purdue University for Communications. For 15 years I worked at Insight Communications in Marketing and Community Relations, developing marketing plans for 10 Indiana cable markets including Purdue University and the Greater Lafayette area. I made a career move into the nonprofit sector for about 6 years as Division Director of March of Dimes for 12 central Indiana counties. Both of our children spent time in the local NICU and children & women’s health issues have always been a passion for me. Currently I am a Court Appointed Special Advocate in the Tippecanoe area working as an advocate with local children whose families are navigating the court systems.

I have been with WBAA in Corporate Support since November of 2016, although I have been an avid listener for many years! Our programming is designed to make a positive impact in the quality of life for the communities we serve. Our mission is to use the power of media to educate, entertain and inspire.

July's AWBO topic will highlight strategies and tips on how to craft your message in a way that will engage listeners and encourage them to support what you support; how to reach more customers in more places, create messages that resonate with a loyal audience; and finally, to reach an educated audience that's ready to buy.

Brenda Renaldo will also be explaining how public radio differs from commercial media as well as the advantages and disadvantages. If you’re looking for strategies to surround your brand with quality, you won’t want to miss this talk.

As I write I find myself pondering the famous Chinese proverb by Lao Tzu, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. To share the essence of whom and what I am today I must acknowledge my joyful journey began with my parents, who by their daily examples instilled in me the fundamentals of love, faith, optimism and service to others.

From this vantage point in my journey I look back at my early adult years as a young wife and mother, my years operating a family retail business, and as an active community volunteer, I can clearly see the recurring role of caregiver and nurturer emerge. In my younger days as a child of the 50’s I may have resisted and resented the label, but now I joyfully embrace it.

Today I am proud to be an insurance professional serving the needs of business owners. The essence of my profession is taking care of others. It is my honor to earn the trust of my clients as they look to me to protect their families and businesses. Together we explore their risk exposures and implement strategies to reduce and transfer the risk of financial loss to the appropriate insurance product. My reward is to see my clients enjoy their life journeys knowing we have planned for the unexpected twist and turns that life brings our way.

Plants that started from seeds or bulbs were watered, sunshine joined in and roots finally started to grow. Stems appeared with leaves on the sides and a bud developed at the top. It wasn’t long before that bud turned into a beautiful blossom for all to enjoy its’ beauty and fragrance.

The life of that plant is like a business as it develops and matures. The Association of Women Business Owners has many amazing speakers with helpful information to develop, grow, maintain, spread, keep a business alive and more. There are also opportunities to learn from other members.

The summer social has always been one of my favorite AWBO events. Each one I attended was a marvel of creativity and an obvious labor of love. Now as President Elect it falls to me and my committee to plan this year's summer social. I was a little intimidated at first as I don't usually think of myself as creative (I'm really kind of boring!) So I thought about the simple things I enjoy most that I could incorporate into the evening. Well, I like reading history and biographies.

Mostly I just love stories! Real stories inspire me, stories of pioneer challenges and struggles that provide a humbling perspective to the challenges we face today. Stories of overcoming unimaginable adversity to build communities, businesses and our nation. Stories that make my heart swell with pride and joy while a tear trickles from my eye. Stories of old houses and the families who thrived there. Stories of everyday people.

So what a better setting than the Fowler House Mansion? We have a lovely evening planned in a beautiful historic setting perfect for sharing our own stories and enjoying the fellowship of AWBO members. Promptly at 6pm the executive director, Colby Bartlett, will provide a short presentation about the history of the Fowler House Mansion. His knowledge of the Fowler family history and his joy for sharing the house will impress.

Mark you calendars to attend, invite a guest, and plan for a special AWBO evening. Come share your story.

I first joined AWBO in 2010, shortly after I started my Farmers Insurance agency. I was invited to visit by a friend of mine and past AWBO President, Julie Rubsam. In my first meeting the activity was “speed networking,” like a speed dating event. I was able to learn about five members rather quickly that day. I saw AWBO as a great opportunity to network, but also learn from other, more experienced, business owners. Through AWBO I have been able to meet women I would not know otherwise and make a lot of friends. I have taken the opportunity to learn from others and build my confidence in my business and professionally. Also, getting involved on the AWBO board has been the best way for me to commit consistently. I had to make that shameless board plug.

I own Isch Insurance Services, an insurance and financial services agency, affiliated with Farmers Insurance and Financial Services. I primarily help families and small businesses make good financial decisions for their future. I offer, auto, home, renters, recreational vehicle, life and business insurance; as well as investment products, such as IRAs, mutual funds, annuities and college savings plans. I have a unique approach of getting to know my clients and their concerns so I can make the right recommendations. I am different from your typical agency or company, because I don’t often put together “apples to apples” quotes or focus on being the cheapest option. I enjoy helping my clients understand what they are paying for and how their insurance and investments can work for them. I get to be part of their team. In my office, I also have two other fully licensed agents, Cheryl Lucas and Melissa Brandt, who help me offer amazing service before, during and after the sale.

In insurance, it is difficult to offer “specials.” But we do have unique discounts we can offer to clients who work in a profession, like teachers, police, firefighters, nurses, doctors, scientists and engineers just to name a few. I tell my clients, life insurance is always on sale today, because next year it will be more expensive if you wait.

I am a firm believer in learning from mistakes and I don’t make the same mistake twice. I also often say “Karma is my business plan.” Now I do have an actual business plan for those who are worried… I’m an insurance nerd, of course I plan… but I am also a strong believer in doing good always pays back and usually pays dividends.

Ten years ago I was invited to an AWBO Ladies Night Out at Walts Other Pub. Our evening was fun, full of laughter and created friendships that I treasure today. What intrigued me the most was the friendships and enthusiasm to empower business owners to be better at our jobs, along with the willingness to share life lessons with others.

My Ah Ha moment came from a speaker from Kokomo who shared her courageous moment of life- “When Life gets Tough!” Her husband lost his job in the car industry and they had 7 kids to feed. She took a passion for Wedding Planning, wrote a book and is now coaching her passion around the country – What a Success and Inspiration that spoke to me that day, as the Recession in the Construction Industry had many challenges!

While the monthly topics sparked my interest, the interaction with other lady business owners inspired me to be better. I quickly joined the board of directors and was the Chairman of Membership. A few years later served as Vice President and then followed by serving as AWBO President for 2 years. While AWBO ladies embraced me, they taught me the ability to listen, provide leadership and allowed me to blossom when leadership was needed. I thank AWBO for the opportunity to serve. AWBO still inspires me today, with a life time of friendships created and heartfelt passion!

A Note From Your President...

Recently there was a report on television and an article in the Journal and Courier about women business owners in Indiana. It also caught the attention of editors in Indianapolis and they printed the J & C article in the Indianapolis Star! Pretty important, huh?

The author of the article said that a census taken recently showed that 162,000 businesses were owned by women. That includes every AWBO member. That number astounded me because it meant just under 30% of Indiana’s privately owned companies were woman owned. Elaine Bedel, President of Indiana Economic Development Corporation, expressed there are many things available in our state to help women get a business started and keep it running. Some owners attested to that in the article, having received help to assist them.

I know every woman who owns her own business had to work very hard to get everything put together to start their business, and keep it running and many factors come in to that equation. On top of all the hours on the job are more hours of hard work running a household! Feeding babies, changing diapers, keeping laundry going, fixing meals, and being chauffeur to every activity your teenager has decided they want to be involved in! I APPLAUD YOU! I remember those days when it was just my husband and I at the business, creating a space for our daughter to play in and later to do homework beside my desk. Those were tough years! And now all three children are grown and work with us, managing different areas of the business. So keep up the good work, it’s worth it!

The Association of Women Business Owners (AWBO), has speakers from many different avenues and themes. If you want to learn more, come to MCL the second Tuesday of every month. Don’t miss an AWBO meeting because each one is action packed and educational.

I’m really looking forward to hearing Gary Higgins on Tuesday, April 11 because he was instrumental in getting our business on its feet many years ago, with the state of the art quality television commercials. He will show attenders how to create a promotional video for social media using our cell phones. Things have really changed in the past 27 years since we opened our business.

How to Create a Quality DIY Promotional Video

Gary John Higgins is the owner of Indiana Motion pictures where he also serves as a Director and Producer of television commercials, corporate promotional, training, and consumer documentary videos. A Purdue University graduate, Gary gained valuable experience in LA where he worked as a Steadicam operator for independent movie and music video projects. Gary is an award winning photojournalist and has extensive experience at a local CBS affiliate. Beyond his journalistic career, Gary has also appeared as an extra in the Nick Nolte film, Blue Chips, toured with American Idol playing keyboards, and survived a helicopter crash.

Gary John Higgins’ presentation will walk us through the basics of creating a promotional video for social media using our phones. He will include information on storyboarding, shooting video, and equipment selection. Gary will share tips and strategies that will make us all video making pros.

As a Mary Kay Sr. Independent Beauty consultant, I have made long lasting friends by offering them an easy way to look and feel beautiful. My Mary Kay business and local Mary Kay Unit offer me girl time while learning about cosmetics and best business practices. Even with my local Mary Kay Unit support, I missed working with and hearing about other businesses in the Lafayette community.

I joined AWBO because I had a GREAT need to spend quality time with a professional group of women. After retiring from banking in 2012, I dusted off my Mary Kay Cosmetic party bag and enjoyed lots of “girl friend” time. But I missed the broader business perspective that I enjoyed as a mortgage and retail banker.

Susan Benedict, my kitchen planner and friend from my banking days, suggested AWBO. With a step of faith, I signed up and paid online before attending the first meeting!!! I was greeted and made to feel very welcome by Melony Ramsey and Sharon Schug. The following year, AWBO asked for members to volunteer to be on the Board. Once again, Susan caught my attention. She said "If you really want to get to know your fellow AWBO members, become a part of the AWBO board". After giving it some thought, I volunteered to be one of the Hospitality Hostesses. As a meeting "greeter", along with Deb McGregor, I have enjoyed welcoming our guests and members.

I have not been disappointed with my decision to join AWBO. This group not only supports each other but willingly listens to new ideas and members.

I first visited AWBO with much skepticism. I wondered how a group of women that met for only an hour a month would be of value for me and my business. That was two years ago and now I have become an advocate! I desperately try not to miss a single meeting.

A Note From Your President...

February

The Month of “LOVE”

It was a cold winter day when my husband, Randy, and I were preparing to eat our evening meal at a warm restaurant. A young man introduced himself as our server and took our drink order. He soon returned to tell us he was mistaken and a young lady was to be our server.

While we were eating, my attention was drawn to that young man as I watched him communicate with the peoplehe was serving. Sitting there was what appeared to be, a young father with his adorable little daughter, approximately 3 years old.

As I watched and listened, I overheard the server asking the little girl questions like, “Did you see Santa?” and “Do you like the snow?” As the conversation continued, I was intrigued by what he had in his hands. He was making something. Then I saw it. A flower appeared, from a napkin, and he joyfully laid it in the hands of the little girl. He had gone out of his way to show love and kindness to his customers.

As the evening continued, it got even more interesting. The father/daughter duo soon left but another young father and young daughter were seated at the table next to the first one. Guess what the server was doing? He was making another flower and asking the little girl the same questions. We finished our meal and I walked up to the server, put some dollar bills in his apron pocket, and said, “You are an amazing, caring person. Keep up the good work”. His manager agreed when I told him the server was a “keeper”.

Showing people that we care, that’s what February is all about. That’s what AWBO is about, too, caring about one another and our community.

I firmly believe that small business is the backbone of America. I was raised on a 900-acre farm near Lafayette, Indiana. I learned that being a business owner was very, very hard, but rewarding work. When I moved to Lafayette and began my business in 2006, I found AWBO by searching online for networking groups. Two important AWBO things happened.

First, the first one-to-one networking experience I ever had was with another business owner who invited me to meet for coffee. I can't overstate the value of learning to reach out to other business owners for one-to-one meetings.

Second, she said the best way to get to know other AWBO members is by serving on the board. So I volunteered to serve on membership and later on hospitality. Both opportunities provided a vehicle for me to meet and learn from great women.

I am an independent insurance agent who works by referral, specializing in Medicare plans. I also offer health insurance, final expense insurance, and legal expense plans. The thing I love most in my business is meeting new people and hearing their stories. I help everyone who is referred to me, whether or not a sale is made.

Before I started my business, I home-schooled four children and took care of my mother in my home (so I'm a problem-solver). I've learned to focus not on who you are (or who you think you should be), but on who you are becoming.

A Note From Your President...

It is really hard to believe we are embarking upon a new year already. It seems like it was only yesterday when we were raising money for the girls at Cary Home for Children. This event will be one of the most memorable times in my life. I stood there looking at women having so much fun together, visiting with friends, getting to know new people, bidding on silent auction donations or putting their tickets in the raffle bag of their choice. Laughter and chatter filled the air. I had so much fun and saw everyone doing the same as we worked together to give back to our community.

It was a pleasure to listen to Rebecca Humphrey, Director of Cary home, as she talked about how our money from last year’s fundraiser replaced a dryer that had ceased working. No state funds are available for appliances! It was also alarming to hear her talk about the human trafficking problem in our county and how it affects Cary Home. AWBO desires to help in many ways. One way we can help is by becoming involved in the Big Brother-Big Sister program. There is a great need for mentors to these young ladies.

Many thanks to everyone who made a contribution, in any way, to make the Fundraiser a very successful event, in spite of the storm that came through. We are very excited to have collected over $3,875.00 to give Cary Home.

With the start of this new year, how do you plan to spend it? What will your priorities be? What will you learn from AWBO speakers this year that will inspire you to take new measures or changes in your life or your business? Will you help other women start a business? Will you become a Big Sister?

Anita K. Dale, PhD, comes to the Professional Sales Center with a 25 year career spanning positions in sales, sales management, marketing, and business development behind her. Dr. Dale was also part of the Operational Leadership Team for more than 10 years, actively participating in setting the strategic goals and objectives of the organization. Dr. Dale also pursued ambitious academic achievements, receiving a B. S. from Purdue University in Agricultural Communication; an M. S. from Johns Hopkins University in Marketing; an M. S. from Iowa State University in Family Financial Planning; and a PhD from Kansas State University from the School of Human Ecology.

Dr. Dale has a strong value for experiential learning, believing the Sales Center is where many students can and should begin honing their sales skills in order to be strong contributors to their organizations upon graduation. She is also fully committed to providing the strong Sales Center partners with strong returns for their investment in the Center through current and innovative programs. Negotiation applies to most everything in our lives. Anita is a master negotiator and will speak on how this skill can be implemented in our businesses.

From 1987-2012, I was active in helping my husband, David Selvey, start and run his heating and air-conditioning businesses in Chattanooga, TN and then later in Rossville, IN. The thought of running my own business had never entered my mind. If it had, I would have come to the conclusion that I could NEVER do that! Something amazing happened though. I joined as a wholesale ambassador for Plexus Worldwide in June 2015. Little did I know that these natural plant-based supplements would take my life in a different direction, both health-wise and in the area of personal growth.

This shy, introverted lady became passionate about sharing something that had changed and re-oriented her life! I had something of value and I wanted others to experience the health and wellness benefits. Before I knew it, I had several family members and friends become customers or join my team. A business had been born. I was making a difference and I loved it!

As my team started growing, I began struggling. Doubts and fears settled in. Could I be a leader to this sizeable team? Could I help them become leaders of their own teams? My desire to love, serve, and add value to others led me to make the decision to continue this growth journey and become a lifelong learner and leader. I faced my fears and started walking through them.

AWBO is part of this journey. Melony Ramsey invited me earlier this year and after visiting two times, I knew this was an organization I wanted to be a part of. The value, friendships, emphasis on giving to the community, and professionalism drew me in. I am honored to be Secretary.

I joined AWBO in 2002, after starting a computer business. We needed to get our name out and meet other business owners. It was one of the greatest things I did for my career. After changing professions in 2008 and opening Bark Avenue Day Spa, a pet grooming salon, I remained active in the group and became President in 2011.
Meeting such great ladies and learning from them has been priceless. The educational speakers that I have heard over the years have given me the confidence to be a business owner. It's also very rewarding to be able to help raise money for a charity during the year! It's great to know other women business owners in town so that we can help each other grow our businesses and make our dreams a reality. I am so grateful to be a part of AWBO!

A Note From Your President...

My heart has been with Cary Home since I was first introduced to it several years ago at an AWBO meeting. Every year AWBO has had a fundraiser, we have chosen Cary Home to give back to the community. Before new state regulations were recently put into place, I would go and make crafts with the girls who were in the house at the time. It was really a blessing to have some fun with them making Christmas decorations to decorate their Cary home with or give to a special family member. Other AWBO members also went to share their talents or professional skills with the girls. These were girls who were abruptly uprooted from their homes, sometimes through no fault of their own. They would find themselves away from family and those they love at very difficult times, like holidays, birthdays, a family member who is seriously ill, etc. They could be in need of everything that we have access to in life, like clothing, pajamas, toothbrush and paste, shampoo, comb and brush. You name it, they were often without it.

But today I would like to share with you some history that I learned about Cary Home.

“Jessie's Kids is named for Jessie Levering Cary, a Tippecanoe County native who was dedicated to the welfare of children. On December 11, 1929, Franklin Cary donated funds for the Jessie Levering Cary Home for Children, named in memory of his wife. The home was dedicated on November 30, 1930. Until 1972, Cary Home operated as an orphanage, housing boys and girls with bad home lives. Cary Home later became a residential treatment center for adolescent boys and girls. Today Cary Home for Children strives to prepare adolescents for successful re-entry to the community through case management and treatment, educational support, family services, and behavior modification."

“Jessie’s Kids Foundation, Inc., formerly The Friends of Cary Home for Children, was expanded in order to better serve at-risk youth all over Tippecanoe” and not just at Cary Home. I previously mentioned the state changes and not being able to go and do crafting any more. I discovered another way that we can help besides having our fundraiser. There is a desperate need for Big Sisters, and of course a greater need for Big Brothers, to help those who go through the home. Some may be there for a few weeks while others, a few months, but EACH ONE needs that big sister or brother to mentor them and just be a friend, listening ear, a shoulder to cry on.

It’s time for ACTION at the AUCTION and raffle tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec.13. AWBO’s fundraiser for Cary Home for girls is from 11:30am-1:00pm at MCL Restaurant & Bakery in West Lafayette! You won’t want to miss it.

Bring a gift for the girls (wish list is on Jessie’s Kids website and Amazon or posted on AWBO’s Facebook), a donation, a friend, your billfold to buy. Everyone’s invited to join in the fun while giving back! See you there!

Holiday Auction 2016 Is Here!

December is a very special month for many reasons. There’s time with families, gift giving, singing, school programs, parades and many other things. However, for the Association of Women Business Owners, we take time out of our very busy schedules as business women, mothers, and grandmothers to give back to the community through a fundraiser for Cary Home and the young ladies who come and go throughout the year.

Here is a letter from Karah Rawlings, Program Coordinator for Tippecanoe County Youth Services and girls presently residing there.

“The girls who live at Cary Home come from diverse and varied backgrounds. We never know what to expect when a girls arrives, so we have to be prepared for many contingencies. Some arrive with nothing but the clothes they are wearing, in need of all basic items including pajamas. Some arrive without clothes that are weather appropriate or that meet their school’s dress code, so we have to supplement their wardrobes. Others have basic needs met, but need items to help them boost their self-esteem or dress up for court or job interviews. The donations we receive allow us to meet all of these needs and empower the girls to choose from new items that they can then call their own.
Regardless of whether or not the girls need basic daily items, they all need a safe, comfortable place to live while they are with us. When our current group of girls were asked what donated items have meant the most to them this past year, they unanimously said “the dryer!” Earlier this year, the girls’ clothes dryer began malfunctioning, causing them to have to bring clothes into the main building to dry. Thanks to the monetary donation from AWBO, we were able to replace the dryer with a new model. The girls wanted to share their thanks for this:

We wanted to say thank you for the new dryer. It has helped out tremendously, we don’t have to take laundry back and forth from building to building. Our laundry gets done faster as well. All we wanted to say is thank you!

A Note From Your President...

Plan ahead and start saving money! It’s almost time to do your Christmas Shopping at the Fundraiser for Cary Home for Girls. (Tuesday, December the 13th , from 11:30-1:00 at MCL, West Lafayette). What fun it is, every year, to see the donations from AWBO members and the community as we pull together to give back! I can’t tell you how excited and thankful Cary Home was to receive the big check of $5000.00 last year that we presented them at our meeting in February, this year!

Speaking of being thankful, November is the month where we are reminded to think about- and be thankful for-all that is around us: our loved ones, our companies and customers, and hopefully the “little things” we take for granted.

Those little things, such as grabbing a drink of clean water or snack from the fridge because we’re hungry! It struck me: many people don’t have these “luxuries”. I do these things on a whim without thinking twice. But I should!

This morning I had the indulgence of a nice, warm shower (including soap and shampoo) in my nice warm house. I ate a good breakfast and plan on having a good dinner tonight.

Something else I often take for granted: how fortunate we are to live in the United Stated of America. Unlike many women worldwide, we have the freedom to start our businesses, run them as we see fit, and participate in our little part of the “American Dream”. And it’s all because some very brave people, hundreds of years ago, decided to strike out for freedom in tiny ships!

I look forward to seeing you at the December Fundraiser/auction, where we can give to young women to help meet their needs and show them that someone DOES care about them and what they are going through. I am very thankful for each of you and look forward to our monthly meetings where we encourage one another.

Business Succession Planning

Stuart Boehning has a knack for transactional matters and is passionate about the financial welfare of his clients. As a business-oriented person, Stuart is dedicated to helping his clients grow personally and fiscally. As an attorney, he is proactive and considerate. “I always try to put myself in my client’s shoes when it comes to the recommendations I make,” he says. Stuart is also responsive, and he encourages his clients to contact him whenever they have a question or concern, no matter the time of day. “I’m always there,” Stuart says. “That’s my job.”

Stuart attended the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and has been practicing law for over 20 years. At BB&C, he focuses on estate planning, transactional and corporate law. He assists clients in creating LLCs, buying or selling businesses, and setting up living trusts. Because he owns several companies himself, Stuart understands how to incorporate children into business and estate plans and provide a secure future.

One of Stuart’s most memorable cases at BB&C included a nine-year, twice-appealed case that eventually received the largest verdict in the firm’s history. “Helping my clients establish business succession plans and family needs in a way that will advance them through the next generation is what’s most rewarding,” he says.

Outside of work, Stuart enjoys spending time with his family. He also enjoys fishing and working on his family’s horse farm with his wife, Ann, and their four children.

Clothing Drive Announcement
Farmers Insurance, nationwide, is collecting Suits for Soldiers and my office is participating. More than 1 million military personnel will be making the transition to the civilian workforce in the next couple of years. So to make their transition easier, we’re collecting gently worn, dry cleaned business suits for both men and women. A Note From Your President...

As your new president, I tell this story to challenge each of us to stay active in our organization, get to know other members and look for ways to grow AWBO and each other. We are unlike any other group in this area! Women’s Resource Committee of Lafayette Young Women began its journey in November, 1981 with the first meeting in May, 1982. As we start our new year, I look back to 2009, when I joined the organization which was soon renamed, Association of Women Business Owners. In 2010, I was invited to join the Hospitality Committee, where I continued to serve until 2015.

I loved working on the Hospitality committee but when Susan Benedict became president in 2015, she asked me to move to Programs. I accepted but kept asking her if she needed me somewhere else. No, she assured me, I was where she needed me. I wasn’t at all sure I could handle the job until she paired me with Deb Plue. We each had our own skills and strengths so we complimented each other and have been a great team. But little did I know that Susan put me on Programs so she could stretch me…..let me experience new challenges. Then it happened! In March, Susan asked me to be President-Elect as well as finish my year on Programs.

It has been a real challenge, but also an amazing year of growth. I have broadened my knowledge of AWBO and had a chance to see how the well-oiled machine works.
Where will AWBO take you? Is there a committee experience in your future? Perhaps a Board position? Maybe working with a new member to help her grow her business! One thing I have learned in these past 7 years: the Association Of Women Business Owners is a great place to learn, spread our wings and grow. Join me in the adventure!

Ram-Z Exchange opened in 1988 on Elmwood Avenue. By 2007, they had outgrown that location, so everything was moved to 205 Farabee Drive North. In 2009, the name was changed to RamZs Emporium- “a store with a huge variety of merchandise under one roof”. It became a place “Where you’ll find things you didn’t know you needed, but now youdesperately want”. While many new things arrive daily, some are so unusual that you would never expect to see them in Lafayette.

In 9,000 sq. ft. of space, there are over 130 displays of fine jewelry, coins for collectors and investors, antiques and collectibles, guitars and some electronics as well as firearms for hunting or protection. They repair treasured jewelry and miscellaneous items at their store daily (it isn’t sent out). RamZs can also custom design a new jewelry piece to meet your satisfaction. People also come to them in need of some cash so they became the oldest licensed pawnbroker in 1990, giving loans to those in need during crisis times. Notary service is also available.

December of 2007, they won the Small Business of the Month award. Melony later served on the committee and became co-chairman. Currently serving on the Greater Lafayette Commerce Education Committee, she really enjoys helping with Golden Apple Award selections. Being in AWBO for several years and on the board has been a favorite thing because she’s learned so much, developed many friendships and found several members who have given her help in many ways.

A Note From Your President...

What No One Will Ever Tell You

I’m talking about “Burn-out”. This is a topic you may have never dealt with. But if you have been in business for several years I’m guessing you have had to address it.

What can you do? How do you snap out of it? What if….. You still LOVE your job/career? You even have a viable business. What can you do when you start to get that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach every time a normal task needs addressed?

You could:

Take up a new hobby to divert your attention temporarily
Schedule time in your calendar to take up a new activity or do community service
Hand off unwanted tasks to an employee or outsource them
Cut back your hours

You could schedule into your calendar a longer than one week’s vacation. Studies have shown that employees who take five weeks of vacation a year, are more rested and effective at their jobs. In fact Henry Ford was probably the first in the mid-1920s to identify this phenomenon. He reduced the workweek from six days a week to five and from 48 hours to 40 after his company discovered diminished productivity returns.

So whether you are dealing with burn-out or just looking for more ways to be effective at work-let’s get that calendar out. It’s time to go against the grain and schedule in time for your next vacation yet this year!

One of our members recently took the residents on a shopping trip to Macy’s. Each girl had a chance to be personally fitted for and received 2 new bras.

Current Needs:
Always in need of bras including sports bras, Hair Brushes, Good Quality disposable razors and shaving cream, Shampoo/Conditioner, body washes, Cardigan or white sweaters, Larger size pants and shirts sizes X-Large- 2X, winter coats, pull-on boots, swim suits nail polish, make-up, mascara, lip-gloss, and craft supplies.

Bring donations to a membership meeting and we will see that they get to Cary Home.

Coming to AWBO for a second time is Debbie Elsner, a native of Albany, New York and graduate of Maria College. She and her husband moved to Lafayette in 1976 so he could finish his education. The move that was initially intended to be temporary, has already lasted 40 years, giving them a chance to raise their son and now enjoy grandchildren.

Debbie's work experience has been in Human Resources and the Non Profit sector starting in 1980. Many years of paid and volunteer work with the American Red Cross brought her to the role of Executive Director. Upon retiring, she formed her own organization in 2009, Personnel Matters, LLC.

She works regularly with small businesses, non profits and organizations not large enough to have someone trained in Human Resources. Helping others and teaching them the things they need to know to successfully manage their staff brings a smile to her face.

And as if one business isn't enough to occupy her time, she has TWO! Dabbling in making lovely Swarovski crystal jewelry became a business and it has gained her enough attention in other states that she makes beautiful pieces for them to sell in their stores. Brides seek out Debbie's wedding planning skills and her Beaditude Jewelry to adorn their bridal parties.

I was told by three mentors that my business model would not fly. They thought I couldn’t charge design fees since no one in this community was trying to making a living charging for the service. And that was in September 1994!

Twenty Two years later I still get to wear my Woman Business Owner hat. This year has been exceptionally full of highs and lows. Design Alternatives was awarded the National “Dealer of the Month” award this past March. I was asked to give my Aging in Place presentation to the state chapter of NKBA and this spun-off into a paid speaking engagement for the Ohio Chapter. Also, I was honored when the local Home Builders Association asked to have their monthly meeting at my new home in May.

My health has taken a nose dive over the last several months. My normal business routine had to drastically change. If I had not owned my own business, how could I have scheduled a slowdown of my work load for a needed surgery? Would my boss truly understand shear exhaustion and lack of ability to keep the normal pace?

Would I trade owning my own business for anything? Absolutely not! We all have our reasons for taking our own daring leap. Times will continually change- just as our AWBO culture itself has changed since 1994 and that’s OK. Moving forward while embracing our heritage, while at the same time growing our membership, strengthening our common bond and creating community awareness for our organization is my goal for Association of Women Business Owners.

Good To Great

If I were to make a book suggestion for an upcoming panel review it would be the book “Good to Great”- Why Some Companies Make the Leap…and Others Don’t by Jim Collins.

I have not been able to read many books the last 3 years but I have heard so much about this one, and from varying sources, that I decided it’s a must read.

The premise of the book was when Jim Collins asked himself the question- What makes “Good” companies “Great? He then assembled a team to help him compile data. The interesting thing is they didn’t start out with any perceived strategy or hypothesis. They let the data and many long hours of strategizing, sometimes arguing and letting the data gel for a while, unveil the patterns that started to emerge.

If we were starting a book review I might ask the general audience what qualities they feel are characteristic of a “Good” company who went on to become “Great”? You may be quite surprised what characteristics the data actually unveils.

I plan for this book to be my vacation read. By the way: Vacation starts at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday July 12th-right after our next monthly membership meeting! See you there!

AWBO is happy to have Michael L. (Mac) McDaniel as our speaker in July to discuss legal entity formation. As well Mac assists his clients on a wide variety of legal and business issues. He leverages his years of professional experience in consulting, software, education, community development and as a serial entrepreneur to assist clients across a wide variety of industries. He commonly serves as a virtual general counsel to advise clients on trademark, brand management, corporate compliance, contract, privacy, real estate, litigation, and agriculture and estate planning/administration issues.

Mac recently transitioned his law practice, McDaniel Hamilton, LLP, to Reiling Teder & Schrier, LLC to assist in RTS' expansion efforts in the Zionsville and Indianapolis communities. Mac serves on Ball State University's Entrepreneurship Board and, as one of the first three alumni of the program, volunteers with Purdue's Entrepreneurship certificate program in a variety of roles. Mac is active in the Zionsville community and is also a member of the American Bar Association, the Indiana State Bar Association, the Tippecanoe County Bar Association, the Boone County Bar Association, and the Indianapolis Bar Networking Executive Committee.

Mac lives in Zionsville and enjoys skiing, scuba diving, and spending time with his wife, Erica, and son, Oliver.

A Note from Your President...

Does Your Business “Sparkle?”

Has it become a “jewel” to be remembered in our community? What do the accessory pieces of your business (the employees, the branding, even your signage) say about the legacy your building? Is it polished and glisten when sunlight hits it? Or does it need some dusting off? Possibly it needs a toss in the “jewelry cleaner” for the shear brilliance of its light to shine through all the years of hard core wear and tear? This could mean dusting off the business plan, or re-evaluating if that five year+ branding and marketing plan is still working for you. Maybe a toss in the “jewelry cleaner” means finally getting your staffing positions in line with job requirements.

We made some nice contacts at the Chamber Trade Show who stand out in my mind as women who need to be at our Summer Social. What Women Business Owners have you met in the last few months who could benefit from such a strong, capable organization?

2016 Summer Social is Fast Approaching

A highlight of the evening will take place at 6:45 pm EVERY attendee will be making their own pair of Swarovski earrings under the direction of Debbie Elsner of Beaditude-Jewelry. And they are beautiful! While handcrafting your new earrings, some ideas to process within your business regimen are..."What kind of Legacy I am building?", "Does my business "sparkle" like a jewel?" "What will I be remembered for?"

This year we are also offering all members the opportunity to market their business with a donation, gift or marketing item for each visitor. Also, please include your business card with the donation. A Note from Your President...

I Saw It In His Eyes

History tells us that the events of WWII, saw women taking to the factories to build airplanes etc. to support the war. This began the push for women starting to work outside the home. Women today can have it all. We can choose to be a stay at home mom, a career woman or a combination of both. We get to get up every a.m. and decide who we want to call on today, who we will choose to do business with, which bank to borrow money from and which employees to hire to produce our products.

I was lucky enough to be able to take my dad on a recent Lafayette Honor Flight. I was reminded all day long that “Freedom Is NOT Free”. It comes with a price. The price they paid is what gives you and me the ability to live our lives as “normal” and “choose” what happens in our businesses. The price they paid is the difference between us slaving for meager wages and being able to choose which “next big thing” is on our business agenda.

The day before the flight West Lafayette Mayor Dennis talked about the stark contrast his family saw between his WWII father’s return with honor, versus the lowly, hollow return the Vietnam vets received. His older brother’s explanation to him was laced with the character of a soldier: “We fight so that people can have the freedom to voice their own opinion”. That means men and women have put their life on the line just so I can lobby, or vote or have a voice when I think my corporate taxes are too high”. Lafayette Mayor Roswarski commented on how it takes a whole team to win a war, from the cooks, to the janitors to the generals. Everyone has a part to play. Just like your business team.

Honestly, until this moment I have never thought about the freedom I take for granted in my business. What would I be doing if I lived in a war-torn region? How about you? Does your business have a location to fly our country’s flag? During the month of May please make it a point to thank any service men/women you know, that the Association of Women Business Owners appreciates their service. I know they appreciate it. I saw it yesterday in the Desert Storm’s soldier’s eyes, as I stood shaking his hand.

Board Member Spotlight
When Shirley Pence became a Stanley Steemer franchise owner 39 years ago, almost all home floors were carpeted. Flooring and upholstery options have certainly changed over the years. Being willing to embrace new technology, equipment systems, and customer busy lifestyles while developing honest, hard-working, customer service-oriented employees is the key to the business' success.

Quality people, quality equipment and quality service has long been the Stanley Steemer mantra. Shirley also enjoys being involved in her church, business groups, and community volunteer opportunities, especially those related to education which include Read to Succeed, Junior Achievement, and the Golden Apple process with the Chamber Education Committee.

Her hobbies include decorating, entertaining, and landscaping. Her adult children and their spouses are the joy of her life along with her 3 grandsons. Another grandchild is coming this fall too!

CASH FLOW IS KING”- Or is It?

I’m noticing a trend. And it’s not a good one. This particular scenario has happened three times within the last nine months, two of these incidents occurred within the last thirty days.

The trend: business professionals are sending out invoices for the first time, six and eight months after the fact. None of these are members of AWBO by the way. However you might be wildly surprised by the various types of businesses.

One bill came and neither the home owner nor I had received a bill in a timely manner-but six months after I close a job is a little late. This makes for an uncomfortable situation for all three parties involved. Another bill that was eight months late, caused me to not be able to take the legitimate deduction off my corporate taxes for last year.

I must admit it took me years to figure out cash flow, but once you understand cash flow is the life blood of our business your management style and processes start to look and act different.

What I like about AWBO

Recently, I was asked what I like about “AWBO” I didn’t have to think too long to figure that out.

Who doesn’t dream of working for themselves? We don’thave to answer to anyone, work when we want to, and make lots of money RIGHT. Well I don’t know about you but that’s not exactly how my business worked.

I don’t answer to anybody just all of my clients. I work when I want to: weekends, nights and early in the morning. What is a 40 hour work week? I get a paycheck only if there is any left after everyone else gets paid. Sounds like fun huh? I love it…

I own BBCS Payroll Service and have been in business since 1997. When I started I had to figure out on my own how to juggle my family and build my business. I didn’t have anyone to turn to with questions or support when I doubted myself. But today, I have “AWBO”. A network of woman with a ton of experience and support. That is what I like about “AWBO”.

A Note from Your President...

I have a New Year’s resolution, more on that in a minute. As I look back over what AWBO was able to achieve in December, I think about what momentum this will carry for us into the next year. Have you heard the news? Your organization was able to raise over $5,000.00 (with a contributing check for $500 from Wabash National) to be donated to Cary Home. We also had a record attendance this year with over 70 people turning out for this event.

Your organization just broke 2 records in 2015! What were some of your team’s accomplishments in 2015? Do those successes spur you on to higher goals for next year or do you take it as “Good Luck”? Were they achieved by coincidence or were they achieved by a strategic plan? Was the plan on paper?

The largest decision I feel our organization has to decide in this next year is whether or not we want to grow this auction. This would almost surely mean re-locating the event. Could the principles we used to grow the auction be used to grow our membership? Which do you feel takes a higher priority growing the membership or growing the auction as our community service event? We would love your feedback. Both will bring more exposure to AWBO and hopefully entice others to check out our organization.

I keep a note card on my desk that reads: “Great marketing will only make a bad product fail faster”. Does our organization meet the standard of being friendly, provide great networking, or offer key strategic advice to a prospective visitor? If you answered “yes”, then let’s take a hard look at all the visitors that have attended in the last year but have not joined? It’s up to all of us as members to be concerned about the survival of this organization. What legacy is this generation of AWBO women leaving for members of the future?

My New Year’s Resolution is this: Do at least (1) creative thing a day. I need a respite from doing the day to day business (Which was the original mission statement of this group). When I don’t take time to get re-charged by doing something creative my business and my mental and emotional health suffer. Instead of your tag line in January, please plan to share a change or improvements you wish to make in your business for the new year!

The Annual Holiday Auction Is Here!

A Note from Your President...

I was in downtown Indianapolis at 9:30 pm last week and decided to swing in to Wendy’s on Meridian to grab some dinner. As I pulled toward the lane I surmised that there was a man begging for food at the car in front of me. Turns out my suspicions were correct and I had already determined if he asked me, I would pay for a meal and give him the food. Turns out that’s exactly what the car in front of me did. The drive-thru worker was screaming at him to leave before she called the police! My heart was racing through this whole incident, but it got me to wondering what means would I go through if I was starving and needed food? I got to wondering where was the compassion from the drive-thru worker? I then realized this sort of thing probably happens quite often.

Fast forward to this weekend of Thanksgiving. I am overwhelmed by the generous donations that you our members and the business leaders of this community have already donated to the AWBO Silent Auction and Raffle onDecember 8th. You and I can mean the difference between young girls knowing someone cares about them vs. possibly a miserable Christmas because of a less than ideal home situation which they can do little to change. Can you imagine a world in which truancy is a more desirable action than staying in one’s home life? Of course this isn’t always the case, but many of the girls I have talked to there really just want to be loved.

If it is money, gifts or clothing you can provide-please review the list included in this newsletter and bring them to the auction. If you’re a good networker, please work hard to bring friends to the auction and explain to them what goes on during the event. If you feel you have no cash flow, and all you can donate is time-what the girls really need are mentors. You just might be inspiring the next entrepreneurial business leader! We all crave the need to know our life means something. Will you help us with your time, talents, or gifts to brighten the lives of those who pass through the halls of Cary Home?

Betsy A. Spencer, President, J. R. Kelly Company, Inc. – Since 1987, Betsy has worked in various capacities within the organization's general contracting business, focusing primarily on financial aspects of the business. In 2003, she assumed the reigns as President, and was proud to register the corporation with the State of Indiana as a Woman Business Enterprise (WBE). Betsy juggles 4 children and 4 grandchildren, along with her general contracting business. She has served on the board of Lafayette’s Friends of Columbian Park Zoo and Indiana Construction Industry. In addition, Betsy is a graduate of Leadership Lafayette, and holds memberships in Top Notch of Greater Lafayette, ICA, MICCS, Purdue's Supplier Diversity Development Advocacy Council and Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. In her spare time, Betsy enjoys spending time with family and friends at the lake, reading, traveling, Purdue University Athletics, and volunteering in the community. Ram-Z Exchange opened in 1988 on Elmwood Avenue. By 2007, they had outgrown that location, so everything was moved to 205 Farabee Drive North. In 2009, the name was changed to RamZs Emporium- “a store with a huge variety of merchandise under one roof”. It became a place “Where you’ll find things you didn’t know you needed, but now you desperately want”. While many new things arrive daily, some are so unusual that you would never expect to see them in Lafayette.

Stop and see RamZs Emporium. With 17 staff members, RamZs is still family owned and operated.

A Note from Your President...

The programs committee has been working hard to brainstorm and bring you presentations this next year that will better help you run your business. And they want to hear from you. Is there a situation you are dealing with and can’t quite solve? Is cash flow getting you down? How about that “new hire” - have you been left wondering if that was a good decision for your company?

We want to bring you topics centered around “Creating Your Legacy.” This topic is not just about an exit strategy. Creating Your Legacy asks you to re-visit why you started your business? Do any legal documents need to be updated? Have you grown enough it makes sense to change your legal identity from a Sole Proprietor to an "LLC" or even an "S" or "C-corp"? Is creating your legacy forcing you to evaluate when it’s time to stop doing the minimum wage work and start doing the “thing that brings in the money?” The question was posed to me three years ago and quite frankly, it felt like a slap in the face-but it was the wake-up call I now wish someone had posed to me much earlier.

Is creating your legacy helping you determine if you have a true business or is it really a hobby? We have probably all heard the statistic, that if you can leave your business for 60-90 days, and it’s still running when you get back, you have a bona fide business. For most of us small business owners that’s a stretch, but the concept serves a point.

Is the definition of insanity “doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results” helping you build an exit strategy? Is everyone in your organization’s job description matched with their true talents or skill sets?

If you need help brainstorming or answering some of these above questions we especially want to see you November 10th. Challenges are what drive us to find solutions to the problem. Our speaker Betsy Kelly is no stranger to challenges. Betsy brings to us a unique solution for handling the challenges her business handed her. You won’t want to miss it. I promise you will be inspired to look at your own challenges and business strategies in a different light. But attendance is a must, in order to see the light!

Instead of a tagline this month, let’s all be prepared to share the one thing we are most thankful for that owning a business has taught us!

In the News…
The Indiana State chapter of the National Kitchen and Bath Association asked Susan Benedict, our current president to give her presentation on Aging in Place on October 15, 2015. The event was held at Lee Supply (sponsor of our AWBO 2015 Summer Social) on Carmel Drive in Indianapolis.

Fifty Five Kitchen and Bath dealers or specifiers were in attendance for the event where Chef Ben made another fabulous meal at the unveiling of the newly remodeled showroom which now includes appliances to their already full line up of plumbing products.

Not only did Susan familiarize dealers with the concept of Aging in Place, she implored attendees to realize “all of us have to do a better job of designing and specifying products that will keep people in their homes as long as possible to bring the cost of these products down, so that American homes will be ready to handle the mass number of baby-boomers turning 65".

Dr. Barbara Osborn, LCSW, is a Clinical Social Worker Specialist at the Alpine Clinic in Lafayette, Indiana. She attended and graduated with honors from graduate school in 1985, having over 29 years of diverse experiences. She will speak about the stress and anxiety that can come with the holidays, and suggest ways to keep a peaceful presence about yourself during these times. Let's make it a season to enjoy!

I have renewed energy. It comes from taking stock of the harvest. Processing where we have been and where we’re headed was the topic of our “Programs Committee" brainstorming session. Have you noticed the leaves starting to change color? Now is the time when all the local farmers are anxious to assess whether their crops will give them any ROI? Have you taken stock of your company's harvest as we head into the last quarter? When was the last time you dusted off those New Year’s Business Goals for 2015?

As you process this production, please consider whether your investment in AWBO has paid off for 2015? Did you take the time or expend the energy necessary to gain networking connections? Does AWBO provide a respite from the everyday grind of doing business-attending a meeting is a prerequisite! Do you view your organization as a new source of business contacts? If so, do you make it a point to introduce yourself to the visitors at the meetings each month? Have you spent any time getting to know a fellow AWBO member outside of a general membership meeting?

Now back to that investment. When is the last time you invited a woman business owner to a membership meeting? When is the last time you shared the value of your investment with a fellow business owner? Sharing the opportunity now, as we start our calendar year will allow your friend to gain a whole year’s worth of the value of AWBO. Would you be willing to volunteer for a limited time sub-committee to further the awareness of our organization? We all know you get out of an organization what you put in. Are you in?

The Flip Side-How a Personal Friendship Helped our Careers

Debi DeBruyn and Catherine Wright-Egar of Purdue University are our guest speakers this month. Debi is the Executive Director of the YWCA and will speak about its various programs, including the Domestic Violence program. Catherine is the Leadership Advisor in the Intercollegiate Athletics Department with Purdue University, and will talk about what leadership means to her. Together, Debi and Catherine will talk about their lifelong friendship and how it has helped them in their respective careers. Please join us for this great program!

A Note from Your President...

Wow-finally someone understands what I am going through as a business owner! How can anyone be expected to knock down a huge list of goals (WIG) in the midst of doing the day-to-day business (the whirlwind)? Especially when the day-to-day business always screams the loudest?

Simply put, "you don’t". What relief I felt after reading “The Four Disciplines of Execution”. Isabel Hogue did a wonderful job of walking us through the execution of this book for our August book review. More importantly, she was able to hit the highlights and explained for us how each of the 4 disciplines should be examined within our businesses to achieve the execution.

As a business owner, do you struggle with creating your strategy or engaging the execution of that strategy? As Covey points out in his video and book, even executives with MBA’s struggle far more with execution than what they were taught in school-creating the strategy.

Kudos and thank you Isabel! Then to drive the point home, Isabel tagged up with Shirley Pence from Stanley Steemer to explain how these four principles had impacted her business. Shirley shared with us they now have a regularly scheduled staff meeting on a weekly basis and she never misses it. They don’t talk about the whirlwind (day-to-day business) they focus on the single most important goal for the company and they hold each other accountable. This builds comradery and a support system. Shirley says you will even hear her team egging each other on-encouraging one another, not just themselves!

The single most surprising comment I heard at this meeting was something I never expected to hear. Shirley says the “4 Disciplines of Execution” has changed the culture within her company. Think about that for a minute.

It’s that time of year!

Time to consider being on the AWBO Board for the 2015-2016

What’s involved? The board meets on the first Tuesday of the month from 11:30am to 1pm.

What do I need to do to be considered? Just let one of the current board members know which position of the board you’d like to be considered for.

What if I know the perfect person for a position? Please ask that person if they would like to be considered first, then, let a board member know.

What are the positions available and what do they do?

Secretary: Monthly Board Meeting Minutes

Membership (2-3 members): Membership Log, New Member Information/Recruiting, Follow up with Guests

Hospitality (2-3 members): Meeting Set up, Welcome table including Name Tags, Business Cards, AWBO table cover and banner

Programs (2-3 members): Monthly Programs, 3 Minute Spotlight Schedule

Are you selling your home or know of someone who is?
Fall is the time to start strategizing - don't wait until the Spring, when you plan to list! Here are some helpful tips:

First, meet with your realtor(c) to determine the timeline of events, what improvements to be made (if any), how best to stage your home, and what price range to expect.
Speaking of staging-what is it? Staging simply means arranging your furniture to best showcase the floor plan and maximize the use of space.
During the fall & winter months, give away, donate or sell items you no longer need - maximize your space by leaving at least 1/3 empty.
Brighten dark rooms and hallways with a fresh coat of paint, and make sure there is adequate lighting throughout.
Keep personal mementos to a minimum: Buyers want to imagine themselves living there, and cannot do that if all they see is the Seller.
Not everyone is a cat or dog lover, and may not appreciate seeing food bowls, smelling litter boxes, or leaving with tufts of pet hair. Find places to tuck them easily out of sight for showings and vacuum on a regular basis.
When it is time to list, make sure you can easily show the house without requiring more than 2 hours advance notice...the easier it is to show, the easier it will be for a realtor(c) to bring Buyers!

As an agent at Coldwell Banker Shook, I have experience with both Buyers and Sellers. I am also a Senior Real Estate Specialist, meaning I have additional training regarding the specific needs of the senior population, where buying and selling is likely to be quite different from years past. A Note from Your President...

Dear AWBO Members,

It is with a sad heart that I inform you that I respectfully submitted my resignation from AWBO.

I have made the decision to close my business, thus, no longer qualifying me for membership. Please be assured nothing bad happened, it's a matter of being at a point in my business where a lot needed to be invested vs it's best to close on a high note. I chose the high note.

I am blessed to say from the time I joined AWBO and over the last 4 ½ years, I have made wonderful friendships, learned a lot about business and thoroughly enjoyed being educated by both our speakers and our members!

Words can not express how awesome a group AWBO is and I will miss seeing all of you on a monthly basis. I will be unable to attend this month’s meeting, but wiil be there in September to thank all of you for your support this year.

I am happy to say that President Elect Susan Benedict has graciously accepted to step in the role of President two months early. Thank you Susan!

I would also like to thank all my board members Susan Benedict, Linda Berryman, Amanda Snider, Shirley Pence, Melony Ramsey, Ashley Bigelow and Rhonda Feurer for making my job as President so easy.

It’s that time of year!

Time to consider being on the AWBO Board for the 2015-2016

What’s involved? The board meets on the first Tuesday of the month from 11:30am to 1pm.

What do I need to do to be considered? Just let one of the current board members know which position of the board you’d like to be considered for.

What if I know the perfect person for a position? Please ask that person if they would like to be considered first, then, let a board member know.

What are the positions available and what do they do?

Secretary: Monthly Board Meeting Minutes

Treasurer: Shirley Pence

Membership (2-3 members): Membership Log, New Member Information/Recruiting, Follow up with Guests

Hospitality (2-3 members): Meeting Set up, Welcome table including Name Tags, Business Cards, AWBO table cover and banner

PUTTING OUT FIREWORKS IN YOUR WORKPLACE

This month Kitty Haffner from Total Solutions will be our guest speaker. Total Solutions works with individuals and companies committed to achieving higher levels of performance and retention through the use of assessments – hiring/Job Fit assessments, honesty and integrity assessments, 360 Leadership Evaluations, Customer Service and Sales assessments. These assessment tools are used for pre-employment, succession planning, and team building -- identifying the most successful and productive work environments for employees as we focus on one’s own strengths, abilities and motivation.

Kitty Haffner graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a B.A. degree in Psychology with a minor in Business Administration. Her work background includes working in customer service with two manufacturing

companies, a paralegal for a law firm for more than 10 years, and 20 years as a consultant and facilitator with her husband, Herm. Total Solutions is a consulting firm, helping large and small companies in the areas of business and strategic planning, sales and customer service training, executive coaching and various assessment tools to help clients reach their greatest potential.

A Note from Your President...

Here Come the Fireworks!

When I was a little girl, I was terrified of thunder and lightning. I literally would grab on to whoever was closest to me and keep my eyes closed and let them lead me around. I hated when the family would open the curtains to the big window in the living room to watch the lightning. Again, eyes closed, ears covered. Why must they put me through this? Then on the 4^th of July, we’d go see the fireworks! I was a tortured sole but I did overcome my fear and actually enjoy storms (to a point).

This confession to you made me think about our workplace fireworks. When you’re new in business or even starting your working career, you have no clue what the fireworks are in business. Some companies may have a few, some a lot with the loud ones and some are duds.

So what are some causes of these fireworks? The biggest one is staff. When we hire someone in our business, they are now an extension of us. They may have passed the interview with flying colors, passed the background check and even sent you a sweet thank you note. You hire them and now the other staff is complaining when things have been going so well, you have someone stealing as the numbers just are not adding up or maybe you’re being publically talked about on social media. How do we pick the right person for the right job and not lose money?

I am happy to welcome Kitty Haffner of Total Solutions as our guest speaker for July. Kitty is going to help us figure out what to do so there are no or very minimal fireworks in your workplace.

Thank you to all who attended AWBO's Summer Social. The event was a huge success thanks to all of you! The event allowed us to take a little time out of our busy schedules to have some fun and to connect with fellow business women. We couldn't have asked for a better evening or a more gorgeous venue to enjoy our gourmet dinner. Thank you again to President Elect, Susan Benedict of Design Alternatives for opening her home and to Chef Ben and Lee Supply of Carmel, IN for preparing the meal. A Note from Your President...

I love to meet new people. Meeting people at a business meeting is a lot different than at a networking event. The usual meeting is arranged seating, down to business, numbers, deals, etc. We've all been there, we all do it. It's ok, not a ton of fun, but ok.

Now, switching that meeting to a networking event...what an opportunity! It's an opportunity to meet someone new, to catch up with old friends, to talk with business associates in a non-threatening way. Not to say we're not professional, but the atmosphere is low key.

With that being said, I personally invite each and every one of you to join us on Tuesday, June 9th from 5:30pm to 7:30pm for AWBO's Summer Social. I am excited to see the different books that will be brought for exchanging, to try food from a private chef and visiting.

So grab a book that you've enjoyed and would like to pass along, bring a friend or two, but most of all, have a great time!!
